 "Rowenta DZ5080" 2009-12-28
By Debbie Arriero (Charlotte, NC)
I purchased this iron just before Christmas, 2009; this is the best iron I have EVER used. I have never had an iron that put out the amount of steam this does. I hate ironing; my husband wanted me to shrink a bunch of his older dress shirts which were made of cotton, and didn't have much polyester in them. Some of them were incredibly wrinkled. After much steaming, with my new iron, these shirts looked like they had come pressed from a cleaners.

The only thing I would change, if anything, would be to have a slightly longer cord. Other than that, this iron is phenomenal, and I highly recommend it.

 "very disapointed" 2009-12-30
By Danielle P. Miller (Mount Airy, MD United States)
I bought this steamer 3 or 4 years ago and got so frustrated by the lack of performance, that I stored it away. My daughter just bought a Eureka Enviro steamer and was so enthusiastic about it , I decided to get the MucCullough out again and read carefully the directions. I went to the shower which was starting to show some moldy crud in some places between the wall tiles. It did not do anything beside maybe softening the stains. I still had to scrub with a toothbrush . I had bought the machine mainly to help in getting rid of the hard water deposit on the glass shower stall. IT did not help one bit. I tried to use it on the floor tiles, as some of the white grout was discolored. No result unless I used the toothbrush again.

After reading the reviews of the Eureka I decided to test the temperature of the steam. I placed a candy thermometer at the hand nozzle and waited to make sure the steam was well built up. The mercury went up to 140 degrees and immediately started to go down very fast. While cleaning I never had a steady steam. I had to keep waiting for the steam to built up again every few minutes. This is certainly not a time saver machine. Another thing I do not like the the floor attachment. The cloth goes on top of the scrubbing brush!?

I should have returned it but I did not. I would not want to sell it to anyone as it is a lemon. A waste of money.

 "works amazingly well" 2009-12-30
By Joseph Schwab (East Texas)
We bought this steamer to replace another floor product, which was a total disappointment, "The Shark." That darned thing did a mediocre job the first time we used it; the second time, it would not work at all. We used distilled water, called tech support, and finally we returned it and found out that the machine had an internal battery as well. This McColloch MC-1275 has really worked well. It's solidly constructed with brass fittings and it really puts out the steam. We steam a grimy area of our tile floor with it, then put a rag on the end of the handle to wipe up all the mess!! We are so happy with this machine, and it's cheaper than that darned worthless Shark product to boot!!!

By Eddie D
I don't generally take the time to write reviews, but if you are in the market for a steamer - this one delivers. I use it to clean the shower doors and the rest of the bathroom - and it does a great job - with less need for nasty chemicals (in fact I don't use any on the shower doors anymore). Lot's of attachments make it very versatile. Would have been nice to have a "gauge" so you would know when its about to stop steaming..... but that's really a minor issue to me.

I purchased my McCulloch MC-1275 after much research. I wanted a machine that did more than just floors. I have been very happy with my McCulloch. It cleans every thing: floors, granite counter tops, glass top tables, windows, grout, bedding. You name it. I really love this machine. I was skeptical that it would clean as well as advertised, but it does. I feel like my house is truly clean and sanitized when I am finished. I gave one to my daughter-in-law who has a 1 year old, mainly to clean and sanitize her floors, since the baby crawls all over. She likes it as well. I would recommend the McCulloch MC-1275 to any one.In almost makes cleaning fun!

 "Home steam cleaner" 2009-12-28
By Les Halla Jr. (Arlington,Texas,USA)
The cleaner is not bad for a cheap(in price, quality of this cleaner is very nice) home steam cleaner. Does the tile floors very nice,it cleans the grout between the tiles pretty good not great but good. It doesn't have great pressure for a steam cleaner, but for the price it does good.It only has about 23-25 psi compared to more expensive steam cleaners that produce 50 psi or more.In the bathroom the tile came out fantastic, you don't know how much overspray from hair spray you get,now the tile floor is smooth and shiny. In many spots on the tile floor you can see the difference in the tile if you do only half of it.You don't realize how dirty the floor is until you steam clean it.Not made for heavy duty cleaning like engines only for light cleaning. Would recommend it others for light home cleaning.

 "A Great Investment!!!" 2009-12-19
By Realin
I thought this one will not hold enough warm/hot water for the whole night when we make our baby's milk. I was wrong, it did... and more. We can bring this and put it in her diaper/feeding bag when we travel - that way she'll have warm milk every feeding. It has a sturdy, stainless steel body plus with just a little twist, out comes the liquid - without having to remove the stopper completely. The main cap can be used as a cup. This also works well for cold beverages/liquids. To clean, I'd recommend using a non-scratch baby bottle brush such as Sassy. One of the best products I ever bought! Well worth the money!

I really like this product. I read all the reviews on here prior to purchasing it and found them to be very accurate. It's a great thermos, good size and keeps drinks hot for long periods of time. Preheating and using the pour spout extend the temperature range and time liquid remains heated. I haven't tried it cold yet but, can't imagine this would let me down. It's a Thermos brand product so I wasn't surprised that's it's great quality, just updated to fit my needs.

"Poor Thread Tension and Constantly Gets Tangled" 2009-10-30
By N. Fraass (Chicago, IL USA)
I get that this is a more basic machine than others - the price speaks for itself. But I can tell you that after about 12 hours of sewing time, this machine is no longer working properly. As others have said, the machine has one speed - fast. If you try to start out slow, it just hums and won't go. My big issue at this point is that the thread tension is all wrong. It was fine at first but now it uses about 5x more thread than it should and it is constantly getting tangled and jamming the machine and causing my needles to break. When it does decide to not eat up all the thread, the stitch doesn't hold because it's too loose. I thought it was human error at first but after hours of messing with it, it is clear the machine is just crap.

The reverse stitch is a bit of a joke too. 90% of the time the machine gets tangled when you use it.

The machine has a very hard time handling thicker fabrics (even with the correct style of needle). The feed dog doesn't seem to be capable of pushing through all the fabric.

This machine is probably fine if you either don't ever plan to use it or use it only for lightweight fabrics. If you ever plan to take on projects that use heavier weight fabrics or multiple layers of material, this machine won't cut it. Pay $50+ more and get a machine that actually works.

I gave it 2 stars because when it did work, it worked OK.

By C. F. Baker (Charleston, SC)
When I bought this I had read a bunch of different reviews for it and wasn't sure. But it fit into my budget and I needed to make my bolero for my wedding. I have hardly any sewing experience but I wanted to make my bolero, you can say I was determined. I made my bolero, successfully, and it's awesome! The machine was easy to work with and is a good mid grade machine. The only downfall I had was that it did not come with an instruction manual or warranty booklet or anything. I had to look on you tube to make sure I was threading it correctly and everything. The needle also came broken but it was okay because it included 3-4 spares in the right sizes. It came with all the small accessories expected, power cord, and peddle. That's it. Good product, hasn't failed me yet.

"So much easier than ironing!" 2009-12-29
By Xbox LuvR (Oregon, USA)
Fill it with water, turn it on, wait a few minutes and PRESTO! It's SOOOO much easier than ironing, and there is no danger of scorching your clothes. This machine does not replace your iron, as some clothes may still need ironing. But for me I can wash my dressier "going out shirts" and steam them in a matter of minutes, then hang 'em up in the closet, they are ready to go!

This saves you so much time and effort, everyone should have one of these.

Pros: Fast, easy, steams for 45 minutes on one tank of water (though I don't have enough clothes requiring ironing to use it that long. This machine is well made. It's the first of it's kind that I've owned, so I can't compare this to other models.

Cons: Not the most visually appealing device, though it will most likely be stored and used in your laundry room, so not a big issue. The obvious: The steam is HOT, be careful with the steam end.

 "Pretty Disapointing!!" 2009-12-28
By K. Blanch
This steamer isn't powerful enough to make much of a difference, on 100% cotton shirts, you have to spend as much time on them as if you were ironing, and I don't think the steamer makes them look as nice as an ironed shirt. I will say that it works pretty nice for sweaters, so you might consider it if you own a bunch of those. Otherwise, skip this product.

By R. Williams (KEARNEY, NE, US)
I have another commercial type steamer that I purchased for $350.00. It has a larger tank and works fine, however, for the money this works just as well and does a great job. It won't give a good you a good drycleaners press no matter how you use it, but that's not what it is designed for. It does a good job at smoothing out light wrinkles, and freshening up garments, drapes, tablecloths and such. Will not replace your drycleaner.

"Spits Water and Takes Out Smells Not Wrinkles" 2009-12-22
By S. Isbell (Indiana)
After reading the great reviews, I purchased this clothing steamer to remove unwanted wrinkles in my fiances dress shirts. This steamer was very loud and it spit water down the front of the shirts as it would steam them. I was hoping there was a kink in the beginning and it would get better, but it did not. I followed the manufacturers instructions and used distilled water but it still didnt help. The water being spit on his shirts created more wrinkles than what they org. had. We did use it on his wool peacoat which worked great to get the smells and a few light surface stains off of it. But, if you are looking for something to get your cotton shirts, dress shirts and other clothing items steamed I would not recommend it. Mabey mine was defective but Im going to try ordering the Jiffy 2000 and see if it does the trick. On consumer reviews website it is rated one of the best steamers in terms of its performance.

"Great way to save wine for a couple days." 2009-11-08
By johns1966 (Seattle, WA)
I have had a couple of these wine savers, and this one works very well for what it is. I have seen a couple reviews on here commenting that this is not effective and does not create an actual vacuum. While it could never create an actual vacuum, I think it is still effective. A wine will not be perfect the next day, but will still be very good. And where even a good wine will rarely last more than two days once opened, I have experienced very drinkable wine after four days. Of course it all depends on where you start. If it's a $5 bottle of wine then don't expect magic.

"So far, seem to work well" 2009-10-24
By D. Rose (Cincinnati, OH)
Bought this because I saw similar (but not identical) bottle re-stoppers at a Winery, where samples could be tested. Staff could uncork and recork the bottles very quickly for sampling.

So far these have worked well. Stoppers go easily into the bottles. Just have to pull the vacuum handle several times until you here a clicking. Not difficult to pull handle. Also when ready to reuse, just need to press the upper 'stem' on the stopper sideways, vacuum seal is broken and stopper comes out easily. So far working well. People at the winery said you could not use this method for 'sparkling' beverages (champagne) as the vacuum would remove the CO2 (sparkle) - so have not tried with champagne.

"You can create a vacuum with a hand pump" 2009-10-03
By J. Womack
While I don't own this item (I have added it to my Christmas list), I would like to dispel a myth that has appeared in some of the reviews.

As a mechanical engineer who has designed vacuum chambers for over 16 years, I can tell you with great certainty that you can create a vacuum with a hand pump.

Technically, a vacuum is any pressure below atmosphere. If you can remove one molecule of gas with this hand pump you have created a vacuum. If you hear or feel air rush into the bottle when you remove the cork, you have created a vacuum.

The more relevant question is how strong of a vacuum can you create?

Since vacuum is simply a pressure (force/area) less than atmosphere, you can measure the "strength" of the vacuum by comparing the force differential across the pump. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is around 14.7 lb/in^2. If the area of the pump's piston is 1 in^2, you could create a complete vacuum with 14.7 pounds of force. In other words, you could create a complete vacuum with half the force needed to put air in your car's tire. The application of force to this pump is not the limiting factor in creating a vacuum.

The limiting factor will likely be the vapor pressure of the wine.

Due to the kinetics of the molecules in the liquid, there are always some molecules of wine that are ejected from the surface of the liquid. The rate at which these molecules are ejected is a function of temperature. If all the air molecules were removed from the bottle, a vapor would be created in the head space at the vapor pressure of the liquid.

Presuming that the wine was composed exclusively of ethanol and water, its vapor pressure would be around 53 torr or 1/14th of an atmosphere ([...]). The pressure in the wine bottle cannot be reduced below this point as long as liquid remains in the bottle.

A wine bottle opening is typically 18 mm, so a force of 5 pounds would be sufficient to remove all the air from the headspace. It should be noted that air may have diffused into the wine and predicting its extraction is complicated by a time element and potential chemical reactions between the wine and the oxygen. It should also be noted that mixing between the wine vapor and the air in the head space would likely result in some wine vapor being extracted during the pumping process, reducing the amount of air extracted proportionally. This effect would likely produce a first order response that may make it impossible to completely remove all air while wine vapor remains.

I don't how good the seals are on the Vacu Vin, but if it feels like you have to pull with about five pounds of force, you are getting a pretty strong vacuum. Less than 1 pound of force would produce a pretty weak vacuum that would leave more than 80% of the air in the bottle.

Either way, have fun.
