 "bad product" 2010-01-05
By Lindy Schubert
I got this as a gift and I wish my sister in law wouldn't have spent the money. It doesn't seem to even do a very good job of cleaning. The handle is flimsy, the water tank is not near big enough, the cord isn't long enough and it is also always in the way. I would recommend a $5 mop before I would spend the money on this.

"Steam mop is not what it's cracked up to be..." 2010-01-04
By TMJ
I didn't buy this through Amazon, I bought it at a local retailer, because I had a feeling it was going to be returned.

First let me say why I had that feeling:

I had seen the ads for this and other steam mops and one of the things I noticed was the floors they use for these ads. They are all brand new floors with a layer of polish on them that looks like they poured liquid plexiglass on them. Then they use the steam mops to clean "fresh" stuff. Well, even fresh spilled dirt and ketchup can be cleaned up easily with a wet paper towel.

So, let me get to my test of this product.

I have older linoleum floors. They should be replaced, but I live in a rental, so it isn't happening anytime soon.

I've been using for several years, the Swiffer wet mop (the one with the disposable pads, but not the one with the spray system), and I've been quite happy and impressed with it.

I tried three tests with the steam mop:

The first test was to use the Swiffer first and then the steam mop to see if the steam mop got anything more... it did, but not much. I used the same pad on the kitchen floor and two bathroom floors and the pad was dirty, but not enough to say "Eeeewwww" and state it did a "better job".

The second test was to see how well it stood against the Swiffer mop with "caked in" cleaning. I put a teaspoon of melted ice cream on the floor in two different spots, covered it up and let it sit overnight to dry up on the floor. In the morning I used the steam mop on one of the spots and it took 14 passes to clean the spot. Then I used the Swiffer on the other spot. It took 17 passes. The steam mop won on that one, but in no way was that impressive. And yes, I gave the steam mop plenty of time to warm up.

The final test was to reverse the first test. I didn't clean the floors for almost two weeks. I then cleaned the floors first with the steam mop, and I needed to use both pads, because of how dirty the floors had gotten over those two weeks. Then I used the Swiffer mop. The Swiffer mop picked up quite a bit more on it's passes than the steam mop had picked up when I used it as the second cleaner. I had to use as many pads to clean the floors as I usually do.

So, in conclusion... If you have a "BRAND NEW" floor, it might be okay, but I do not think the steam mop is as great as it's been advertised. It's expensive, it's bulky, you're fighting a very heavy and long cord while trying to clean, which makes it even more difficult. This is definitely not an item to use for "quick clean ups" since in the time it takes to pull it out, unwrap the cord, wait the minute for it to warm up, etc. you could have used a towel with hot water to clean up the spill and been half way to the store to return the steam mop. If you need to change the pads while cleaning, it's difficult and dangerous... after all there is hot steam pouring out of it. Because of it's weight I used as much energy and muscle using it on one floor as I use with the Swiffer on all three floors.

About the only thing the steam mop has in it's favor is... yep, it dries instantly. But who cares when the floors aren't clean.

But then, instantly drying could also be another negative. Since it's hot steam, it could be just sealing the dirt, etc into the floor.

I have better peace of mind with the Swiffer, and so does my pocket book, my arms and storage area. Not to mention you just throw away the pads, instead of gunking up your washer with them.

I would say my $9 Swiffer with the $5 pack of 24 pads, that last about two months (I use 4 pads a week) beat the you-know-what out of the near $100 big Shark. By the time I spent the money on the Swiffer system to equal the Shark's price, I would have had to replace the Shark anyway.

 "Poor quality." 2010-01-03

Received this product as a gift. Use it once and it broke the second time we tried to use it. Very poor quality. Only one outlet for steam. Return policy did not allow us to send the unit back. Save your money and buy something else.

"It beats using a mop and bucket!" 2009-12-29

I just purchased the shark steam mop this morning. There was an after Christmas sale so I got it for $45.00. Ive wanted one of these for quite some time now due to the fact that I have all tile and wood floors. I wasnt really sure what to expect but this is what I got... Puting it together was easy! It is very lightweight but seems quite flimsy. The water tank is small and I had to refill it after mopping my kitchen floor which is small. The pad seems to be well made however it is attached by velcro so Im not sure how long its stick is going to last when you wash it after every use. The steamer is only in the middle of the mop so getting to the edges of the floor isnt that great. It does seem to do a good job cleaning and its a lot easier than using a mop and bucket. It also dries really fast! Im not sure I'd pay full price for this product but for $45.00 I think I got an ok deal. Bottom line.. It cleans good, its easy to use, and it sure beats using a mop and bucket!

 "Makes my floors baby-friendly!" 2009-12-29
By L. Farley (WV, USA)
I asked my husband for a steam-mop for Christmas (since we have a nearly 6 month old who's trying to crawl)... and he bought me this one- I put it together in a matter of minutes after opening it, and had a go around the living room (laminate flooring). I was pleasantly suprised by the steam generated by the mop, at first I thought I would be refilling the tank often because it didn't seem to hold much water, but I was able to finish my entire living room without refilling. All you do is fill up the tank (I used water from my Brita filter, since we have well water), give it 30 seconds or so (you'll hear it start bubbling, like hot rollers) and give it about 10 pumps... then you're ready to go! I do agree with other reviewers, the handle could be more sturdy, but this hasn't been a problem so far. I don't find the mop hard at all to push on my laminate flooring. It does leave some streaks, but I have yet to find any cleaning method that will leave a totally streak-free finish on my floors (however, this mop does not seem to leave a filmy-haze like the swiffer-mop or mr. clean)! My dining room floor didn't even look dirty when I mopped it, and the pad looked totally black when I was finished (I definitely recommend this for a coal-miner's wife!)...best of all it is white-sock approved! I am very pleased with my mop & love having a way to get my floors clean without smelly chemicals my son would be crawling around on!

*I forgot to add...the floor is slightly damp after mopping, but dries pretty quickly!
