"Product stands the test of time" 2010-07-23

Have always loved the suction on this machine. Hose is a little bulky with this latest model and the cord is shorter, but still love it for it's durability and power. Great product!

"Most effective & reliable vacuum I've ever used" 2010-05-01
By pOOdle mOmma (Fort Wayne, IN United States)
My experience with Panasonic vacuums began approx 15 yrs ago, when I worked for a retailer who sold them. I remember being impressed that I never had a Panasonic return, however there were many vacuum returns from other brands. I bought my first Panasonic with my employee discount, and I will confess I won't buy another brand. I had others given to me [before I bought one], and have used others which were extremely inferior by comparison.

PROS: (In order of importance to me):

-Best suction of any vacuum I've ever used; if it decreases then it means your bag is full

-The CORD REEL/rewind! The cord is reeled into a built-in chamber by simply pushing a lever with your toe.

-You can save money and get inexpensive generic bags (without HEPA filter) for about $2/bag (12 for $24)

-Panasonic is the highest recommended brand by both of my local vacuum shop chains

-Easy to use out of the box; belt is easy to replace when needed, as are the bags

-Color of the unit itself is relatively neutral (brick red)

-The light is bright and very functional

-Easy to locate a clog due to the hatch that opens on the back (eg the occasional sock from beneath the sofa)

-This model requires bags (imo this is better; you have to take bagless ones in for cleaning by a professional)

CONS:

-HEPA bags are costly type U6 (about 3/$10); I used my left-over U3 bags which also worked (they are w/o HEPA)

-Bare floor use is limited. I do use it occasionally, but it could be disappointing if you bought it for this use. (IMO you need to get a separate bare floor vac; look at the Hoover Flair for about $40; this is what I use when I have a big job on my bare floors. http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Bagless-Upright-Vacuum-S2220/dp/B00020BQGK/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1272736868&sr=1-5 )

-Would be nice to have a longer cord; this is 25ft. However, I'll take the cord reel any day over a longer cord.

I am shopping for a second one for upstairs; I am buying the same model. I cannot complain really. It's been very faithful.

"Have had Panasonic Uprights for 15 years. Hate this one!" 2010-04-09
By cinbun911 (Northern California)
I stumbled upon Panasonic uprights 15 years ago and loved the on-board tools, the bypass motor, the terrific suction and the cord reel. That first one lasted about 8 years and then I got the next model. Seemed to be similiar, but a few changes in the wrong direction. This MCUG471 seems to have been designed by someone who never vacuumed in a house.

Most of these have been stated before, but I didn't realize how much it would impact me:

1) No way to turn off the brushes. I use on-board tools a lot, but you have to keep moving the vac so you don't ruin the floor.

2) On-board tools are terrible. No more flat floor brush, just a tiny upholstery brush instead. Only two very short extension hoses and not enough places on the vac to store the tools without them constantly falling off.

3) The stair handle on the older models was great, now it seems to be upside down. There's nowhere to grab to lift.

4) The redesigned handle is too tall for short people and doesn't have the looping handle part.

5) The latch that keeps it upright seems weak and it isn't as easy to go from bare floors to carpet.

I think if I had never owned a well-designed Panasonic, I would probably like this vac, but they raised the bar of my expectations from them and now I'm disappointed.

It does have cord reel, which I really won't live without now, although the cord is pretty short. It has a really powerful bypass motor which means you can suck up everything and won't chip the fan, and it will suck up EVERYTHING! It's pretty manueverable and it doesn't seem heavy to me. It does seem more stable and doesn't tip over as easily as the older models did.

All in all, if you've owned Panasonic Uprights, I would think you'd be disappointed in this model. I wish I had listened to some of these reviews and waited for a newer model.

 "PANASONIC LOYALIST" 2010-03-25
By Vicki Muse (Capitola California)
Because I have always been extremely pleased with Panasonic products I had bought several vacuums from them....mainly when I move & relocate far away and end up not wanting to pack one more item. In the past the models I bought were the lightest weight on the market. This time I assumed, didn't check for that stat & was somewhat suprised. It is a normal heavy vacuum. I am petite & appreciated the light weight style, but still appreciate it over all. It comes with a smaller version/attachment-great for doing my carpeted staircase that has quite a turn that's usually difficult to negotiate. It doesn't seem as quiet as the others I had sought out from Panasonic...I just chose this on everyone else's satisfaction.
