"Best suction on vacuum I've ever used - 3 cat home" 2010-08-04
By R. Rawley (Palm Springs, CA USA)
This Dyson vacuum [DC28-Animal] now in use three months, has replaced a top-of-the-line Miele Blue Moon canister AND monthly maid service! On the first use I filled the container four times [2 bedroom home] with all the bits, dirt, and cat hair that neither the Miele nor the maid service had picked up. [...easier to maintain after the first deep cleaning.] I am not sure what else I can say in praise better than that!

The setup was intuitive and easy with the included pictographs. The tools are all quick to add and remove.

cons: The included crevass tool is too big, with no narrow tip for getting deep between seat cushions. No included hard floor tool with bristles. [The included flat head floor tool or the unit itself with brushes off still feels a bit wrong on wood and tile flooring after so many years using a brush tool.] The cord is not self-winding takeup, however it is quick-release. Only two tools can travel on-board.

pros: ease of use, an extra-long cord gets to more area with few stops to change wall plugs! easy to empty larger cannister [than other Dyson models] with one-click open, TERRIFIC suction, very-good suction powered upholstery tool, 2 hepa filters that are cleaned, NOT replaced [save a bundle here annually]! tools that work, the flat head floor tool is clearly superior under furniture with little clearance, easier to store than canister, 5-year warranty shows they stand behind their product

 "Dyson Animal" 2010-07-25
By shotsmoky
The vacum is very powerful and works great. The reason I didn't give it a five out of five stars is it is a little bulky and can be a little hard to maneuver. I suppose the dyson ball might be easier to use. But in the end I am quite happy with its performance and would rate the Dyson Animal very highly.

 "Impressive results" 2010-07-23
By Forddo
The Dyson DC28 Animal was delivered within a couple of days. It was a breeze to put together. I am amazed at how clean our rugs got from using the Dyson DC28 Animal the first time. I never realized how much hair there was on the rugs. The rugs are so much more vibrant and look new. Emptying the hair and dirt is easy although you need to give the vacuum piece a few good shakes over the trash container to remove all the hair. The Dyson is a bit heavier than my canister vacuum to carry and push around. I find the deep cleaning to be the best cycle for ease of use and cleaning of my rugs. The vacuum is very powerful and also does great on bare floors. If you are seeking a vacuum that can deep clean and effectively remove pet hair, this vacuum is for you. You will not be disappointed with the results.

 "Amazing cleaning power!" 2010-07-21
By Kirk
I love love love this vacuum! I have three dogs and a toddler so I vacuum a lot. I was shocked at what my Hoover Wind Tunnel left behind the first time I used the Animal, sooo gross! No wonder my allergies were acting up.

I whole-heartedly recommend this unit with two minor caveats; it is very "heavy" to push on thick carpet. Its strong suction with its actual heft makes it tougher than others to push around; not an issue on bare floors at all. Also, it does not get under low furniture. I have to use the little attachment to get under sofas, etc. Those two gripes are far outweighed by its amazing cleaning power for me.

Pros:

Incredible cleaning power

Useful attachments

Rugged construction

Somewhat quiet

Easy and fast to empty

One click to go from carpet to bare floor

Cons:

"Heavy" feeling on thick carpet

Difficult to get under stuff

Price is more than most (but worth it)

If you have animals (or kids) in your family you need this machine!

 "Utterly perfect for me" 2010-07-18
By liz blue eyes
I bought an Electrolux about five years ago that was in the mid-priced range. So not top-of-the-line, but way better than the Fantom I'd previously had. The Electrolux picked up all kinds of debris on all types of surfaces. The drawbacks? Constantly replacing the bags, replacing a non-washable filter every few months (which are now not even available for purchase), a hose that came off of the vacuum easily, wands and attachments that could come loose at a moment's notice and come crasing down to the floor. It also tipped over VERY easily and was heavy both to lift and to push. But it had no smelly exhaust and seemed to do a good job of cleaning. Or so I thought. This vacuum died recently, due to a handle which had been coming loose for ages. It was rubberized and it finally pulled apart completely, wrecking the wiring. After reading reviews here on Amazon and on other sites, we took a chance and purchased this, because we have a cat and crappy apartment carpet that's eight years old. I am so incredibly glad that we did.

I opened up the box and within two minutes, the vacuum was put together and ready to use. The dust canister comes out easily and also dispenses debris easily into whatever trash receptacle you're using. I don't have to touch ANY debris. I had cleaned with my old vacuum (including the upholstery) five days before receiving and using this. I liked that it was quieter than my old vacuum and was easy-to-push. But the proof was in the pudding. The handle was comfy and I loved the almost Sci-Fi look of the machine (it made my other vacuum seem and look as archaic as a 1985 Apple computer). My bedroom, which is only used by me and had no visible debris on it, filled the canister (which holds approximately four cups, I'd say). Unbelievable. I am a person who has always vacuumed at least once a week, sometimes two-three times a week. I had a pretty thorough maid service earlier this year when I was recovering from a knee injury. So my carpets shouldn't have been this filthy. But sure enough, they were.

My mother and I had been griping for months about how bad the carpet looked, but really didn't want to go through the hassle of getting it professionally cleaned, for various reasons. I had resigned myself reluctantly to believing that my carpet would always look bad. Not so, now. Within two days, my carpet looked virtually brand-new. No joke. I went around the two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment and collected another three bins of debris- from carpet only (three rooms total and a small hallway area). Insanity. But fabulous. I fell in love- with a vacuum.

This is so simple to use, it feels effortless. I plug my Dyson cord into an electrical outlet in the dining room (which is in the center of my apartment), and it reaches easily into all corners of the home- I never even come close to having the cord come out of the wall. It's longer than my Electrolux, which was still pretty long. The tools are amazing. One tool is shaped like a faucet, a "U" shape. It rotates around 360 degrees, in four different directions. I got the top of my kitchen cabinets (they were NASTY, despite monthly cleaning with a brush), the walls and the tops of high places cleaned with no step ladder for the first time ever. I was able to rotate this to clean the top of the fridge AND the cabinet bottoms right above it- impossible with any vac before. The dusting brush is a big oval with very soft bristles. I used it on walls, knick-knacks, lightbulbs over the vanities in the bathroom, for dusting wood furniture, on the TV screen and the mini-blinds. All were left dustless. The larger surface space and two suction holes allow for speedy, more thorough vacuum-dusting. The multi-floor attachment (low-profile for getting under beds and cleaning hard floors) is fantastic. It's the first one I've had that truly works for getting under the bed ALL THE WAY and does a decent job on both tile floor and carpet. No flying debris or anything. It almost becomes like a canister vac when using it with the wand detached. I don't mind that, it's just a personal learning curve for me. Also, in case anyone is concerned, it picks up clumping kitty litter with no problems. I had a previous (non-Dyson) cyclonic vacuum which would heat clumping kitty litter (as I vacuumed it up) into a glue-like substance before it could hit the container, and nearly break my vacuum with the clogging which occurred from that.

This vacuum just does not tip over AT ALL. I used it for two hours today cleaning crazy spots- the laundry room shelving, the top of the kitchen cabinets, under the bed, you name it. It was turned this way and that way, taking the attachments and the wand off and then on again as I went room-to-room. Never came close to tipping once, one sign of a very good vacuum. I love the H.E.P.A. filter on it, too. I noticed an immediate difference in the air quality of the room after I vacuumed, especially in the living room. We don't smoke and never have, but we do burn a lot of candles. The vacuum leaves the room so much cleaner in air quality, not just on your surfaces. My normally-clogged sinuses have already shown a DRASTIC improvement, especially when I wake up in the morning.

The upholstery attachment continued to blow me away. It has it's own beater bar and is as solid as a rock. It has a tab for your forefinger or thumb so you can grip it easily and comfortably. I filled up the canister with debris from just one sofa, an armchair, an ottoman and a recliner- all of which had been vacuumed fairly recently, and the sofa and armchair have slipcovers over them. Gross. My mom said her skin doesn't itch anymore when sitting on these items, and I had the same experience. I don't use the stair tool because I don't have any steps, but maybe I will someday, who knows. There is also a long wand attachment with a stiff, 45-degree-angled brush on the end, plus a smaller version of that is an attachment on the vacuum itself (it comes off and on the vacuum easily, but doesn't fall off or anything). The longer one is remarkable for baseboards and getting wall, carpet and hard floor edges clean. The shorter one is great if you just need to do a quick swipe with the brush on a baseboard- then the brush slides down to just a wand end for edges or corners next! There is also a mattress brush, specifically designed to pick up the lint and dust in a mattress and box spring. I used it today and it covered a large space quickly and got quite a bit of debris out. The hose doesn't come out of this machine at all, it's just suberb, and TOUGH. The engineering in this machine and it's attachments is a marvel over and over again. Whoever designed this knew what they were doing, and obviously had feedback from housecleaners who knew what they needed in attachments.

I bought this elsewhere and got the eight attachments with it, as well as the adapters needed to use it both with just the hose and then with the hose and wand together. I think that people who did not get all of these attachments might be far less pleased than I am with the vac. The tools really are important. Be aware, the attachments, wand and hose are not universal. I am fine with that because the Dyson tools are so superior to my old vacuum cleaner's that I could throw the old ones out without a second thought (but I won't- I'm donating my old vacuum and parts once that's fixed). I do not mind that only one attachment (besides the wand/handle) is on-board, because it would be far too heavy to push with all of the attachments clinging to the machine. I keep the tools in a big basket and use them as needed. The two vacuum filters are incredibly easy to get to, take out, clean and put back in. A manual comes with it, but the filters are washable (I can't see them needing to be replaced, they are very well-made). Just let them dry for at least 24 hours before putting them back in. No bags and no replacement filters to buy means saved money, in the long run.

I have been cleaning house for thirteen years and I've used at least seven different vacuums in that time. This is superior in every way to every single vac I ever owned before this. I hope it lasts for years, but whenever it needs replacing down the road, I'll be buying another Dyson.
