After much research into stick vacuums and buying and disposing of three other models in the last two years I finally (and reluctantly) decided to invest in the Miele S163 and am thrilled with its performance. My experience with the other stick vacuums had convinced me that:
1. Anything cordless or rechargeable was absolutely worthless
2. A powerful motor is required to defy gravity in not only picking up dirt but holding it in the dirt chamber
3. Bagless models are high maintenance
I wanted an easily accessible vacuum I could operate with one arm to frequently clean hardwood and tile floors of cat hair, cat litter, food crumbs and stuff that gets dragged in from outside and also to pick up surface dirt on rugs and carpet. The Miele's performance for all these tasks is exceptional.
By contrast, the last stick vacuum I owned before this was the Oreck ElectrikBroom, which was a complete waste of money because it:
1. Only picked up retained hair and fine dust; it barely picked up crumbs and fine cat litter and when it did would drop them right back on the floor when the the motor was turned off.
2. Would perform for less than 15 minutes on a charge
3. Had to be cleaned out after every use.
4. Was difficult to maneuver around furniture because of its cumbersome floor nozzle.
The Miele has a flexible and streamlined floor nozzle, a powerful, but not too noisy, motor that can pick up and hold sizable objects (including coins), uses disposable bags, and never loses power because its 25-foot cord plugs into an outlet. I would not recommend
it to thoroughly clean rugs and carpet but it does a reasonably good job of removing surface debris.

This is the best vacuum I've ever had or used for a hardwood floor, I recommend this to anyone who has lots of hardwood floor to vacuum. However, it's pretty average on carpet and doesn't do any better than a 20 dollar Walmart vacuum.

I bought the SMiele 163 a month ago and it's been working really well. It's not noisy and aspires really well.

I've been using the Eureka "The Boss" Smart Vac 4870 for years. I used it for vacuuming carpet and I was very pleased with its power. However, we had all the carpet torn out of the house and replaced with hardwoods eight years ago, yet I still kept lugging that 25 lb. vacuum around the house, upstairs, downstairs and main level. Finally today, after hours of on-line research, I drove to a Miele dealer's store and bought the Miele S163. It weighs 9 lbs and zips easily under furniture, into corners and makes short work of the floors. When I wanted to to flatten it to go under sofas and beds, I twist the body. The front element stays flat on the floor while the body is also flat but sideways. I bought it today and I vacuumed today. Because of an earlier post, I looked carefully to be sure I wasn't scratching our hardwoods - no sign of scratches. If problems arise in the future, I'll repost.

I am German born and familiar with the Miele products. They were very high regarded in Europe. That was the reason I spent all this money on a mere vacuum broom. What I noticed right away it is kind of cumbersome to push around, I am 70 years old and thought I bought a lightweight cleaner. The thing that upset me the most that is takes forever to pick up cat hair from my carpets. I have to push back and forth forever to he point where my arms hurt. Its alright on the wooden floor. I have a little hand held Shark that does a better job picking up hair. I am sorry I spent so much money when I could have bought something cheaper with better results. Also the little dirt bags have to be mailordered. All in all I am disappointed in the quality of this expensive product. I read the customer reviews before I ordered it and bought it as the result of the many 4/5 stars review. I would like to rate it 0.
