 "Love my foodsaver" 2010-03-03
By Starr Cruise
I read lots of reviews and this model had the most reviews and the best reviews for the price it was listed at. I had purchased another foodsaver that only had two ratings (they were both good ratings though) - but it did not work. Amazon and seller were awesome and I returned it promptly. This one came out of the box working and I love it. The first one had a DVD which was excellent - this one did not - that would be my only complaint. It is easy and convenient to use, and I like the convenience of being able to buy the bags, canisters, storage containers from Walmart. I do a lot of cooking in large quantities to freeze and I love the ability to either micro or heat bags in boiling water - the boiling water being almost as fast I believe healthier.

 "My Second One" 2009-12-25
By Eve I. Cucuzella
I had one of the older models of this product and it worked well until my kids got the idea to seal chip/pretzel bags etc... the sealing strip came off and was of no value to me. It did last quite a few years. I recently purchased one of these and they seem to have redesigned it so that doesn't happen as easily but Chip/Pretzel bags are a no-no in this house now. The only thing that I hate is that the bags are really expensive in my opinion and you waste alot when you use the compression mode. Other than that I like it. I just purchased one for my sister for Xmas. Enjoy

 "belongs on the counter" 2009-12-17
By R. Jensen
They tell you this appliance will win a place on your counter and they are telling the truth. I used it for all the food I dried this year and then put it in the canning closet...for about 3 days. Soon realized I wanted it for all kinds of things. I now reseal cheese so it doesn't mold and reseal coffee bags to keep it fresh. I also bought the "lids" for wide and small mouth Mason jars for vacuum sealing and use those all the time. If you have jars sitting around you can use them instead of the bags. Very handy item and worth every penny. It's on my counter now.

 "good value" 2009-10-19
By Bij (Prairie)
I bought this product to replace a less expensive model that lasted about 2 years. I use it over the summer to package fruits and vegi's and occasionally other foods such as soups etc. So far so good. One feature I particularly like is the detachable liquid catch tray inside. It's easy to remove and clean. The unit is fairly compact and easy to store. The model that I purchased came with 2 rolls of bags and three canisters. One feature that I did not like was that you have to leave a generous margin of plastic at the top where you seal the bag. It's at least 3 inches and seems a waste to me. Otherwise, this product performs very well.

I have not had much luck with these. The one I got from here failed right out of the box. Motor mount was broken, possibly in shipping. It was replaced and now seems to be working fine.

 "Sealer" 2010-05-28

"very satisfied with this purchase" 2010-05-04
By Sharon N. Carter (Chicago, IL)
I have had my sealer for approximately 2 -3 months and am thoroughly satisfied with ease of use and effectiveness of product. I would like to suggest this tip for other users .. if you're a tightwad like me and want to save money on bags, try this. Wrap your food in portions in "saran wrap", "cling tight", or similar product prior to sealing. Place in sealer bag and seal as usual. When you open the bag, the individual food packages will be sealed tight and will remain so for future use .. unwrap only what you need and place the rest in a regular a ziplock bag .. I kept food in this manner for over a month, without any freezer burns. For Chili, soup, or other liquid food, freeze first in Tupperware or similar product, then wrap and seal as above.

"Not the best choice for some folks" 2010-04-16
By J. Macfarlane
I picked up the Model V106 at Wallmart a few months ago. It appears quite similar to the VS107 on this product page, and if indeed it is a similar machine there are some caveats. The VS106 has a single activator button (and by the photo the VS107 seems the same). On my unit the vacuum pump runs whenever the machine is activated. Meaning, if you are simply trying to seal a bag (and not suck the air out, which is a routine process if you use the rolled bags), the pump will turn on needlessly. This will likely reduce its life. Next, I placed my unit into fairly heavy service right away, sealing a backlog of items and performing probably several hundred seals in a few weeks. After a while the actuator started to fail. I had to try several times to get the unit to turn on and seal. The more seals I do the harder it is to turn the unit on. I have to tap the lid really hard, or play simulated "conga drums" on it and finally the machine gets in the mood to work...until it ain't in the mood anymore. Also, I always have to cut short the amount of time the sealer operates after the vacuum has sucked all the air out. The sealer will actually melt the bag if I let it run the full time. Two or three seconds seems to work (using the factory seal-a-meal bags).

Having said that, the unit does apply a good vacuum, and indeed I have sealed a whole plethora of items. It's just that next time I will spend a bit more than the $49.95 Wallmart price. MOST IMPORTANTLY, KEEP YOUR RECEIPT no matter what you buy. Wallmart for example has a 90 day return policy, and if I hadn't lost my stupid receipt I could have swapped machines when mine starting acting up. Not sure about Amazon's policy.

Quick tip for newbies:

Always make TWO seals on each end of bag. Then if you get a bad seal you have a backup and the bag stays sealed without letting air in.

 "It Doesn't Suck" 2010-03-19

So far, it performs as advertised. It pulls the air out of anything I place before it.

I use it to freeze that extra chop, or deep-marinade a piece of meat.

"Great vacuum packer at any price!" 2010-02-16
By Fred J. Vogel
First off I think all the 1 star reviews look suspicious and may be the same person. Come on, not a single 2 or 3 star review?

I have tried a bunch of these vacuum sealers and this is by far my favorite. Its easy to use and the hands free feature is great! Simply hold it down for 3-4 seconds and the machine takes over freeing you to start packing your next bag. This is the old school clam shell design and I think its still the best. With this style you can put multiple compartments in one bag :) No one ever talks about doing this but it can be really cool!

The heat strip actually works better than my $170 Food saver. This is the part that actually seals the bag when your done. A lot of these machines won't seal or get pinholes in the seal if there is any moisture in the seal.

The only downside is the slowish speed (not bad really) and the lack of a soft food setting, meaning if you put a bagel in a bag it will flatten it like a pancake! Some machines have soft food settings or overrides so you don't crush the food. Not a big deal really all in all a 5 star review!

 "just works" 2010-01-27
By Thomas Debiase (Sonoma, CA USA)
The new design for the Foodsaver is a HUGE improvement over previous models. There is some additional bag usage, but the seal is much wider and stronger overall; a fair trade off in my opinion. From the moment I plugged this in and plainly inserted a bag, it just plain works. Exceeds every expectation!

 "Love it!" 2010-01-21
By FFDR (Chicago, IL, USA)
I've never owned an earlier version of FoodSaver, so I can't compare different models. But this one has done an excellent job for me for the past 2 yrs. I had no problem to insert/cut/seal bags. I wish that I could use it w/ regular bags and w/ less waste of bags -- who doesn't want to save a penny or two -- but I am happy w/ this model. I find it particularly useful for the followings:

- canister vegetable/berries to keep them fresh

- canister coffee beans or nuts

- marinate steak/meat/fish. If you tend to forget to marinate food according to recipes like I often do, half hour of marination using the FoodSaver can get the content very flavorful.

- bag seal fish/meat before freezing

- vacuum wine bottles. Wine still tastes good the 2nd day. Much better than the Rabbit vacuum we owned earlier

I found the following could cause the problems like bags/jars not sealing properly, and I solved the issues by making some corrections:

- not allowing anytime between sealing will make the machine too hot to operate properly. I often do that and can sometimes get away w/ it. But when the machine complains, I'll just wait a bit like 20sec. before sealing the next bag.

- bags leak air after sealing or canister takes longer to vacuum. It could be caused by some part of food got stuck at the seal. Solution is to make sure that the bag/canister are clear of any food at the sealing line.

- when the bag is too full, i.e. only the minimum amount of bag margin is left, the machine won't work. So I will just leave a bit more room in the bag.

All in all, I am happy with it.

 "A colossal PITA !!!" 2010-01-17
By M. G. (Michigan)
Any woman (or man) in the kitchen does NOT want to spend time sweet talking this machine to get it to work.

It DOES waste bag material. My guess is this was an "intentional added feature" by the manufacturer to sell more bags. At $40 a roll that gets expensive. You do need at least 3" of extra "top" space to seal the food inside the bag. (another waste)

Don't even THINK about saving anything moist in these bags - when the seal gets the least bit damp it won't seal.

I've read all the reviews, (too late) and all I can do is hope it does the job I bought it for. That's to save the steaks, meat, etc with NO freezer burn. If not, back to SAMS !!! For now 2 stars.

"I really wanted to like this FoodSaver but...." 2010-01-09
By Silicon Ghost (USA)
I've wanted one of these things for a long time and finally received the model v3835 FoodSaver over Christmas.

Pros:

The only pro is the space saving design. I would much rather have the larger unit and have it work well. I'm surprised this model even made it out of their QA department.

Cons:

a.) Very loud. The other models may be the same but I didn't think these would be this loud. You can hardly talk to someone next to you while sealing food.

b.) Wasted space due to auto-seal mechanism. Many people have complained on this and I have to agree. You should be able to seal the bag right near the end, but this model forces you to waste a good 2" of space on average. If you're lucky you can get it to trigger with a little less bag, but results are not consistent.

c.) Failed sealing. Many times the unit would error out after a minute of running. The manual says this can be caused by the gasket being loose or the bag inserted incorrectly. I tripled checked everything and still had this problem regularly. It also happened with the one of the marinating containers so I know it wasn't related to how I had the bag inserted.

In summary, I would not recommend this unit. How they got it to work so perfectly (even with someone very familiar with how to use it) on the infomercial is beyond me. It shouldn't be this temperamental. I really want a FoodSaver that works well and may consider an older model as others have recommended. For now everything has gone back to the store as a return.

"What A Piece of Junk THIS Thing Is!!! Get Something Better!!!!!!!!!" 2010-01-08
By Daquan13 (East Boston, MA.)
I've only had this ill-fated machine since October last year. That is only 3 months ago that I've gotten it.

It worked fine up until about 1-1/2 weeks ago, when at first, the heater strip had stopped working. Then it started working again, then the pump motor wouldn't suck all of the aire out of the bags, stopping just short of having some air in the bags, and then the heater strip would seal the bags, fooling the unit into thinking that it produced an air-tight seal.

But the sealing was still too loose - inviting air into the bags which still paves the way for freezer burn and food spoilage in the freezer!

I bought this machine in hopes of avoiding the pitfalls and problems that I've encountered with this co's lower priced units. But I found out that even with the most expensive machine, which this is,the blasted problems from the other units have followed me right to this one just like a annoying cancer!!!

This is it!! I'm done! I'm SO DONE with this company's ill-fated piece-of-junk vacuum sealers!!! This is the 4th FoodSaver machine that has crapped out on me too prematurely!! Getting an industrial one the next time that I'm ready to buy one. Until then, I'll just happily stick with the no-frills but reliable Ziploc Hand Pump Vacuum Bag Sealer.

I've HAD it with FoodSaver!! No more will I put up with their inferior quality and flimsily-made machines!!!!!!!!!
