Great in concept, sadly not well executed for the long run. If you're thinking of buying a Roomba, based on my experience you should assume that it will *not* last beyond your warranty. My Roomba started acting up after only light use, but as it was out of warranty I was out of luck. After a few polite if canned responses from their offshore "customer support" I was told that my Roomba's constant spinning was not repairable. A call followed with a naive sales pitch that I find hard to believe would work with *anybody*. My Roomba was obviously defective, why would I want another? And why would *you* buy one in the first place? For this price, you have a right to expect more than a year of service. But in this case, I assure you, you can't. The quality of the design and manufacturing clearly needs more time to catch up with the quality of the concept. Until then, I will return to using a more reliable machine that incorporate more resilient -- albeit simpler -- technology.

I got my Roomba for Christmas the year before last and once I got over my initial hurt feelings about getting a vacuum as my big suprise, I really loved it. It did an awesome job of keeping our floors clean and was able to get under pieces of furniture which were really hard work before. I have two dogs, a cat and two small children and it was able to handle that. I had just had my second child and so the roomba was such a help, when nothing else was getting done, the floors still always looked clean. I think it's a great appliance for anyone who has just had a baby. I also really appreciate it when we have guests over as I could be cooking or whatever else while the floors were getting vacuumed, it feels like an extra pair of hands. I do need to use our old vacuum to go around the edges of the carpet every month or so.



Unfortunately after 5 months it stopped working. I contacted customer service who were really slow and would email every couple of days to get me to try different ways of getting it to work. I would email them right back to let them know that hadn't worked and then wait a couple more days to get another suggestion. After a couple of weeks of that they sent me a new one. It worked for a couple of months then the battery failed. We replaced the battery and since then it's been very hit and miss. We've replaced the battery again but it goes through spells when it doesn't work, then inexplicably works again for a while. You get so used to not sweeping or vacuuming manually that when you have to do it it feels like a huge imposition!



While it's worked I have absolutely loved it and can't believe that everyone doesn't have one. I would honestly say it saves me about 3 or 4 hours a week. I just really wish it had worked better for longer. That said I am absolutely going to get a new one soon!

I love the concept. They just aren't reliable enough for me. I went through 3 in 3 months. The first one had a bad battery. The second one started going in circles after 2 weeks. The third one stopped picking up dirt. The gears that turn the brushes stopped working. Never figured out why. I generally have a very clean home. So, it wasn't operator error. I still want one... but I want one that is going to last. I was happy with the cleaning it did. They are kind of noisy. They bang into everything in order to change direction (at least until they learn the floor plan). I loved the remote, the docking station that it parks itself in when it needs a charge. Irobot, I still have all the accessories. It's time you pony up and make them so they last!

My Roomba has been a savior! I recently had spine surgery and have difficulties doing even the lightest house cleaning task, so I decided to purchase the Roomba, just to get me through the recovery period. But, "she" is so thorough and does such a nice job, I will continue to use "her" even after my recovery is over. I bought the basic model which included 2 virtual walls, but I've decided to now purchase a docking station. Then, my Roomba will be able to go directly to her home on her own when she needs re-charging, instead of "singing" her little song advising me that she is finished a room and needs re-charging. I am very pleased with my iRobot and wish I had purchased one years ago. Don't hesitate!

I bought this roomba from Target. I was very disappointed in the job it did. We have mostly hardwood and area rugs. I can imagine the roomba would do better with wall-to-wall carpeting, if you were willing to roll up your rugs every time you ran it or in a house that doesn't have pets. In our situation it just wasn't worth it. I tried letting the roomba run on the main floor while I was upstairs. It would run for about an hour and do a pretty half-assed job. It didn't come close to getting the floor against the wall or in corners clean. The unit was also loud enough that it was annoying to be in the house while it was running, even on a different floor.

Well, first of all, most of the people who buy this product are people who either don't have the time to vacuum as much as they like, are injured and can't, or just would rather spend time doing something else. Which reason you choose will make a difference in whether you actually want to buy this.



If you want more control over your time, this may help you, depending on whether you have pets and whether you mind trading in vacuuming time for occasional brush cleanings. (How occasional? This will depend on the number of pets you own and how badly they shed.)



If you're injured and bending is not good for you, forget it. You will need to do plenty of that, as this vacuum brush and cleaning comb system with small dust receptacle will require lots of bending. Also the unit is quite heavy and it doesn't always find its base like it's supposed to, so you'll have to lift this to take it to its base.



Is time something you're short on? You will notice you don't have to spend your valuable time vacuuming as much, but you will have to clean the brushes each time you run the unit, sometimes even more often if you have pets. I have a carful of dogs, several of which are German Shedder, er, German Shepherd dogs. Under these circumstances, this vacuum can be a Godsend or a pain in the kiester, depending on your perspective. We have to vacuum every single day, of course, so we bought this to pick up the slack, which it does beautifully, provided we run it every time we come down in the morning, and then once again after the unit recharges. This vacuum is not perfect in picking up everything on the floor, but when you run it this often, what it doesn't pick up the first time, it will get the next time around. Friends are amazed by how well it works, but again, we run it a lot. It will not do a perfect job the first run.



Which brings us to the next point. Can you just run this thing and leave the house, then come back to a floor fit for guests? Don't count on it. I stay home while it's running. If you're planning on setting the timer and going to work and expecting a guest-worthy floor when you come home, and this is very important to you, this vacuum is not for you. Sometimes the brushes and sensors can be finicky, causing the unit to shut down. It will shut down if it feels the brushes need cleaning, sometimes whether or not they do, or the unit may catch on a slightly raised hearth or chair and shut down until you can free it.



At first I was disappointed that I have to clean brushes once or twice each run. (Even if the unit doesn't completely stop for a cleaning, I notice greatly reduced effectiveness if I don't clean the brushes a couple of times each run). But then I realized, stopping once in a while to clean the brushes is much better than the constancy required to vacuum the whole house manually. It cuts my housecleaning time down drastically. So cleaning the brushes is unanticipated maintenance, but we can actually have a spotless house with lots of dogs, without my having to do the vacuuming. I like that.



My biggest beef with this: durability. The side brushes don't last long. (Although, they've since redesigned these so the bristles don't fall out and the arms don't crack off.) The plastic casing for the front castor eventually doesn't hold the castor after you've removed it to clean the pet hair away from the pins. And there are a-l-l-l-l manner of nooks and crannies for that pet hair to find and wrap around. The battery doesn't last long at all. The sensors went crazy on one of the side wheels and we had to have it replaced. We dropped the lighthouse on carpeted flooring, and it hasn't worked right since. And the lighthouse chews your batteries. I highly recommend and use rechargeable batteries. So, you pay a lot of money for convenience, but the price is neither warranted by perfect function according to intended design (and therefore your expectation), nor durable parts.



This vacuum will not entirely replace your regular vacuum as the small unit does not have a powerful enough motor to give you a really deep clean: important for allergy sufferers to consider, and if you have steps, those you will need your regular vacuum to clean.



In a nutshell:



If perfect function is important to you, you'll be disappointed. If you're just looking to have some extra control over your time or spare your back a bit more, this can give you that. If you have pets and see regular brush cleanings a good trade off to the constancy and time required to actually do the vacuuming yourself, you can have a very lovely floor with greatly reduced effort. But I'd get a good warranty and expect to replace parts and batteries frequently. Then again, ours gets lots and lots of use.



Would I buy it again? With our multiple pet home, I guess I would. But I do expect irobot (the company that makes this) to make some strides in functionality and durability. If they step up to the plate, I'll be a fan. Otherwise, I'll expect a drastic reduction in price. And by the way, the price of replacement parts is an absolute rip-off.

After owning a Roomba 4000 series for almost 2 years and having some minor issues that the company resolved for me, I decided to purchase a new 500 series when the cost of a new battery and brushes for the old unit was close to the cost of a brand new roomba with a new warranty. I used the new roomba less than the previous model and the side brush was a problem. iRobot knows this and will replace the brush as often as you request a new brush during the warranty period of one year. The brush breaks often. No big deal. Apparently this model also has an inherrent problem with the front bumper. My 2nd roomba never made it to the one year anniversary and their customer support while available is generic and I was not pleased in the end with the outcome or service. My bumper problem cannot be fixed. If under warranty, irobot will send a whole new unit but if the warranty is void, then they offer a discounted program for a lower end model, I suppose to try to appease you. I was not happy with the customer service. If the customer service was better and they actually repaired the roombas and built them better, I might feel differently since when the roomba did run properly, it did a good job. I am just not prepared to spend $300+ for a new unit that works for one year and then pay another $100 for a lesser model to replace it. That gets costly. I am disappointed in the company.

 "Better build quality than Roomba" 2010-06-16

I purchased my Scooba a few years ago after some success with the Roomba vacuum cleaner. Of course, short term success sometimes isn't the best thing to use as judgment when buying technology as I ran into some quality control issues with my Roomba 560 machine. All has been fixed, some under warranty, others out of pocket expense but I am back to being a happy Irobot customer. I waited quite a while to review Scooba because it is not something I use as often as Roomba. I wanted to make sure I had enough experience with it as well as time so I could see what (if anything) would go wrong with it.



I am happy to report that I have had no major issues with Scooba since buying it. I am not talking about quality of its ability to clean my floors but rather in quality control of its build by Irobot. To date, the only thing I had to replace is the battery (my fault...more on that later). Compared to what I replaced on Roomba, this is a miracle!



Using Scooba is much more involved than running Roomba. Outside of the occasional brush cleaning and emptying of the dirt bin, Roomba can stay out of site out of mind and run when you want it to. Scooba requires the user to do several steps to get it run. I'll quickly walk through them.



1. Add solution and water. This is the easy part. You can either use a solution made specifically for Scooba or use a specific amount of vinegar. You get a measuring cup which will give you the exact amounts for each method. I use vinegar as its cheaper and seems to clean just as well. It might smell for a bit but only lasts for maybe an hour or so.



2. First time use or after prolonged periods of no use you have to prime Scooba. What this means is you have to manually add water to the main line that draws water out of the clean tank. Scooba comes with a suction cup ball thing that you fill with water and then attached to the main line (a little plastic piece) and force water into it. If you don't prime Scooba properly, it will just run around your floor without putting any water down. Sometimes this takes one or two tries to get it to work right. If you use Scooba on a regular basis, there seems to be no need to prime it every time.



3. Clean cycle - once Scooba is filled and primed...it will do its thing. Not much to say here except that Scooba doesn't seem as "smart" as Roomba and I find it has a tendency to go over the same areas more often, although I still usually get close to full coverage.



4. Clean Scooba tank- After Scooba is done, you will want to empty the dirty water chamber. Otherwise, if you leave it.....well....the smell....don't want to go there.



5. Clean other parts of Scooba - I would recommend cleaning all of the brushes and areas underneath as well as make sure all of the suction areas are free of dirt, hair, whatever or you may run into some issues later on. Since Scooba is actually sucking up water it puts down, it picks up other stuff as well if on the floor. Luckily, most of the stuff is blocked out by a filter screen that can easily be removed and cleaned after each use.



So that's it but with this model, you will need to manually return Scooba to a charging cord as it does not have a nice charging dock and auto return like the Roomba I have.



So how does it clean?



I would give it a B+ overall for its cleaning ability. Overall, the dirty water I dump out of it is clearly dirty and my floors are left with a nice shine when I use the vinegar/water combo. I have even used Scooba on my hard wood floors, however I usually follow it up with a cloth to dry the floor off more quickly than it would on its own. As far as getting dirt off the floor, Scooba can usually get most stuff up but it may take one or two passes. Luckily, Scooba seems to pass over the same spots several times so most of the stuff on my floor usually gets picked up. Battery life is very good with Scooba easily able to dispense an entire tank of solution on one charge with power still leftover. My kitchen (where I mostly use it) is 26' X 13" and I add a small bathroom as well so it is a decent size area.



Some of my issues are as follows:



1. Scooba is BIG. It is much higher than Roomba so it cannot get underneath some things that Roomba can get to. Overall, its not a huge deal but I have to remember to manually clean under things like the kitchen cart since Scooba cannot do it.



2. Scooba cannot climb over any minimal size threshold which prevents it from going into any other room. Sometimes this is fine if I just want to clean the kitchen but if I want it to get my hardwood floors, I have to pick it up and move it over the tiny little threshold that separates that rooms.



3. Floor vents tend to get Scooba stuck more often than not. Roomba is very smart and easily backs off of things like metal floor vents but Scooba seems to get confused and will ultimately get stuck 3 out of 5 times or so.



4. Scooba seems to leave behind more water that I would have thought. I still have to wait quite a while for my floors to dry as some areas are pretty wet especially if Scooba has gone over an area a few times. I would say that the dirty water tank is maybe 1/4 full when the clean water is completely drained. It seems like Scooba's vacuum just isn't strong enough to suck up all the water it puts down.



5. Suction - I learned after maybe 20 uses that Scooba can get clogged even if you do regular cleanings. I was noticing that way more water was being left behind and the dirty tank was virtually empty when Scooba was done. I immediately though Scooba's suction pump had gone so started doing some research. I found some very helpful tips to try before I went screaming to Irobot. The first one I tried happened to fix my problem. I filled the dirty water tank with clean water and then shook the living daylights out of it. A ton of gunk came out that must have been clogging the pipe that sucks the water in. I was very happy that this was the problem as it took no longer than 5 minutes to fix...and lots of internet research.



6. Battery issues (my problem but still a nuisance) - my battery would not hold a charge for more than 10 minutes after I inadvertently left it unplugged for several weeks. I tried all the tips and tricks to reset Scooba, do this, do that...but nothing worked. I bought a replacement battery from Amazon (a 3rd part battery) and it is working very well and even lasts longer than the stock one. My issues really comes down to the type of maintenance a person has to do with these types of batteries (NiMh). Caring for a battery should not be like caring for a pet. However, you have to remember to either use Scooba on a regular basis or make sure you follow the storage instructions for your battery or you risk a short lifespan on the battery. I believe I paid around $45 for the replacement so its not bad but its still $45!!



7. Scooba is NOISY!!!! Tough to watch TV in a room that is near the room Scooba is cleaning. Much louder than Roomba!





Overall I am very happy with the build quality of Scooba. Just like Roomba, I have a few small areas that I have to remember to clean on my own (corners and under stuff that it can't get to) but it does what it states it will do...cleans your floors for you. Your involvement is a little more than what you have to deal with Roomba but its still a lot better than getting a bucket, mop, etc.. And doing it all yourself. Just remember to clean it and try some of the troubleshooting tips out on the internet before you throw in the towel!

I really hope the company looks at these reviews. I would give this product 5 stars were it not for the "small" but extremely annoying design issues. First of all it does get stuck in the least likely places such as between the legs of a chair. My guess is that there's nothing one can change to avoid that. If space openings roughly match the Scooba's width it'll likely get stuck there - unfortunately. This is not a huge issue. Once it gets stuck a couple of times you find ways to rearrange furniture to prevent the device from going there the next time.

Much more annoying is everything related to the tank design. Latches, handles, sensors are a nightmare. The pull-up release handle and the latch on the tank is in my lowly opinion the height of design incompetence. The latch would release on its own in the middle of cleaning causing Scooba to stop and complain that the tank is open. Ironically some time later the latch got stuck so I could not take out the tank. No amount of pulling on the handle did the trick. The flimsy handle finally broke off. I now have an invalid device that still works but looks like it fought in a war.

While it was still brand new it would frequently stop and signal for you to "check tank," while there were no obvious reasons for it - solution tank still full, dirty water tank still with plenty of capacity. This is by far my biggest problem with the device because what I was really hoping to accomplish is leave it cleaning when I depart the house in the morning and come back to clean floors when I return. Instead you come back and find this thing either stuck, with a popped tank, or just a bogus "check tank" signal and you realize that it didn't get even 5 minutes into its cleaning. You now have to "jiggle the handle" and listen for an hour to its - fairly loud - operation when you want to relax after work.

All of these issues are made all the more irritating since I took extra care to avoid them by thoroughly cleaning it on a regular basis.

I would still recommend it to anyone who likes clean floor, has a LOT of patience, but doesnt have time or energy to swiffer. If iRobot folks could put their heads together and fix these rather basic design issues I would be a much bigger proponent. Until then swipper the floors to avoid the frustration.

My husband bought the scooba for me for christmas and it was awesome. It swept the floor and mopped it. It worked great. Then only about 4-5 months after having it things literally started falling apart. The valve crumbled apart when i tried to clean it. Then the handle stopped working to open it so we had to use a knife to open it then finally the handle fell off. Now we are left with a pile of parts. I tried emailing the company and the website is a joke.They put you through hoops just to tell you that you can't email them without an account even when you do have an account it says you don't have one. So i called the company and they were not helpful and told me there was nothing i could do except by a whole new body and tank without the battery for $180. I think its a great idea but a complete rip off. By the way my husband spent well over $200 on this just to use it for 5 months then toss it.

Love the idea!

One thing that I wish I knew was that although this robot is rated to clean the square-footage of our floor, it must do it in 2steps (it'll stop and you must change the tank). The next size up would do our whole floor in 1 go. Since this is a second home, it is difficult to baby-sit it than if it was at our main home. Also, you need to clean it out right when it finishes cleaning, again not ideal for running as we walk out the door because it can't set until the next visit. For these reasons, the vacuum would have been a better match. (Plus we could also use it at the main house).

Problem with OUR robot, is that the suction drying does not work. So the floor is left wet to air dry. Not critical, as it leaves the floor clean, and I usually run it when I'm stepping out for a bit. Still, a bit annoying because I paid a pretty penny for something that is supposed to vacuum, scrub, wash, and dry all in the same pass!

Since the hardwood floors are not at our main house, I'd be open to swap this mopping robot for a similar-rated vacuum (with auto dock and auto scheduling).. good option for someone who hates mopping as much as I do!

I simply would get more usage from a vacuum (dog hair!).

Also, I msut say our dog is frightened of everything from Vacuums to Water, but does not mind this floor robot ! Great job on the design!

I really wish they named this Scoomba for consistency with roomba. Also I hate the confusion with utterly unrelated "scuba". Anyway, it is Very common for people to refer to is as scoomba.. it's natural. Easier fo rbrand recognition, too. Well, we can't all be in charge! Anyway product is cool.

What it is good at:

Cleaning lightly soiled smooth and flat hard floors.



What it is not good at:

Cleaning heavy dirt or heavy spots, such as jelly.

Cleaning hardwood floors with distinct seams between boards (leaves dirty fluid in seams).

Cleaning textured or rough-surface tiles (leaves dirty fluid on surfaces).

Cleaning tiles that have grout between them (leaves dirty fluid on grout). Because of this it is useless on these floors. You have to wash by hand anyway to clean the grout.



A time saver for some chores, but certainly will not eliminate all your work.

Last year I obsessed about the tile in my kitchen, hallway, breakfast room, and utility room. LOTS of tile to obsess about. My 3-year-old grandson had been visiting and came in to show me the bottoms of his socks, which were dirty. I had been mopping. The cleaning lady had been mopping. I couldn't imagine why we still had so much dirt. We had even been using the steam cleaners, which were getting up lots of dirt, but, as my grandson showed me, there was lots left. Okay, one reason was the 2 dogs who go in and out during rainstorms, red Oklahoma clay mud, and the fact that I drag in mud when I'm doing yard work and gardening.



I tried 20 or so different tile cleaners. Somewhere down the line I realized that it wasn't the TILE that was dirty; it was the GROUT! So I went at it scientifically, trying each grout-cleaning product to find one that would safely and effectively clean the grout, without having to be scrubbed. I have much too much tile to have time to scrub the grout.



Here's an example of some of my notes BEFORE I discovered how well Scooba works.



-Hoover Grout Cleaner - Works well with a little bit of scrubbing.

-409 Granite Cleaner - I love the almost non-existent but nice odor and the way it works, but, like everything else, takes scrubbing.

-Oxi-Clean works well, but takes scrubbing and if I use too much, leaves a white residue.

-SHOUT! - Does work. May need to repeat or scrub a little more the first time. Easy to spray on, but requires scrubbing.

-SoftScrub with Bleach - Works, but bleaches tile and grout, STINKS!. Great for WHITE tile/grout.

-Clorox Cleanup - Doesn't really clean the grout, but stinks!

-Scrubbing Bubbles - Doesn't work.

-SoftScrub (plain) doesn't work.

-Spray and Wash - Doesn't work.

-Zep - Works but stinks and requires scrubbing



There were others, but there was nothing positive to say about them.



At that point I got my new Scooba, I had worn one out several years ago and hadn't replaced it until now. It worked! It actually gets the grime out of the grout, over time, not instantly, and doesn't require scrubbing. I used it maybe 3 times a day in some areas, but it takes little effort to fill it with the Scooba cleaning product (don't use anything else because you may end up with a dead Scooba) and then empty out the dirty water when you're finished.



My tile had always been fairly clean, but now, when I use it, which isn't every week, it's squeaky clean. The grout is now almost completely back to its original color.



I love my Scooba!



Let me add that my cleaning lady uses the Hoover Spin-Mate floor cleaner and I have a review of that as well. She loves it, but she has never used the Scooba of course, because that's not what cleaning ladies do.

 "Lots of water left behind, misses spots - no Roomba!" 2010-02-16

About two weeks ago I ordered the Roomba and immediately fell in love with it. It does an amazing job of cleaning our carpets, rugs, and wood and tile floors. Being so pleased with this product we immediately ordered the Dirt Dog for the shop and the Scooba 330. I was very hopeful for the performance of the Scooba.



When I started running the first one that we received I noticed it was leaving behind a great deal of water, traveling fast and missing entire parts of the floor, and that it's algorithm for travel seemed to leave it in some spots for a very long time and yet never hit other spots at all.



Not being ready to give up on the Scooba, we evaluated all the parts to make sure that everything was connected correctly and nothing was clogging the vacuum. Check there -- everything okay. I then ran a test with just 1 cup of water and measured only 1/3 cup in the dirty water tank when all the clean water was used. So Scooba had left 2/3 of the water on my floor. I called the iRobot folks and asked them how much water I should expect Scooba to pick up and was told that it should pick up all the water that it drops down.



Hearing this, I decided I should try out a different unit -- just in case we had received a bad one. Kudos to the great folks at Amazon for immediately shipping me a replacement that arrived the following morning. Unfortunately, the replacement Scooba had the exact same issues as the original.



This time I measured 3 1/4 cup of water in and only received 1 1/3 cup back in the dirty water tank -- a slight improvement but still leaving practically 60% of the water on my floor. What I was left with were huge water spots everywhere.



This one also seemed to have problems with the travel algorithm. My Roomba effectively gets an entire room -- while the Scooba missed several areas of my approximately 250 square foot kitchen entirely -- places it never even ran over.



This one also races over spots and you can see where part of the area that it covers is not even wet. In fact I had three juice spots in the middle of my floor that I saw Scooba travel over probably half a dozen times and yet never clean up.



I will grant you that it did clean part of my kitchen and the water in the dirty tank was indeed dirty. But having been so impressed with Roomba I am sadly returning the second Scooba that I received. I think that Scooba needs first and foremost an actual wet vac so that it picks up most of the water that it lays down. It also needs to have more consistent cleaning when it goes over an area, and an algorithm for movement that is as effective as Roombas.



If you don't mind water spots on your floor or don't mind following along behind it to dry up your floors, it doesn't do a bad job. But at this point I will wait for a few more versions to come out to see if they implement any of these necessary changes to make this a great product. For now Roomba and my Swiffer Wet Jet do the job much better.

I read and followed the instructions carefully, charged the battery as recommended and put the robot to work. Well...it didnt last long. After 5 minutes it stopped working with a service light indicator on and 2 beeps error code which means that you need to contact the support to have the unit repaired. I am returning the item. I will not bother browsing forums about what to do or giving them a second try.



iRobot did a very good job with the roomba (I am very happy with my 530) but my experience with the scooba 330 is unacceptable.

This doesn't really save you much time with mopping, because you still need to go back after the Scooba is done and wipe up the excess water. If you leave the house with the Scooba running, you will come back to a dry floor with water spots all over the place.



For me, the hard part about mopping is all the other steps involved in the process: moving furniture, sweeping, drying. The Scooba only eliminates one step - the actual mopping. But you still need to fill the Scooba, set it up, and clean it. It's more work than just doing the dang mopping yourself.



Bottom line: if you're looking to save time with this gadget, you won't. Don't waste your money. Way overpriced.

I have owned for over two years and it has only worked about 5 or 6 times during that period. When it works, it takes so many attempts and so much work that I could mop the floor manually in less time. There are always error messages that cause so much frustation.



We have also owned 3 Roombas that have each worked for a short time but eventually fail. The maintenance required and the expensive battery replacements negate the positive benefits of these robots.



The concept is good but the engineering is faulty.

Roomba-530....Love it. Made my life much easier. Just threw out another regular vac that broke and "Rudy" just took over. He has been working here for 2 1/2 weeks non stop with great success. Be smart and realistic...I read every review and he has met my expectations and more. Suggestions ...empty the dust bin after every use and tap out the filter,

if you have animals, woman or girls w/ long hair you must provide maintainence by pulling out rubber and brush rollers and getting the hair wrapped around them off. This will prolong the life of your roomba and it will work great. Most reviewers who had a problem admitted not cleaning it.

The cleaning is still better than vacuuming, it takes but a minute.

I find he works better if you break up the amount of space he cleans. I only have him do one room at a time and use the lighthouses to block him from spreading out too much-even though I have an open house plan.....he can find his charging station better with average size rooms one at a time.

He does not bump hard and damage any of my "special " furniture, stops before the steps, he is not as noisy as a regular vac, why do people expect him to be silent?

I will try to update this review if my opinion changes, but I want another one for the upstairs so I don't have to drag him around. At this point I will wear him out vacuuming my entire 2,800 sq. foot house. He works every day and I just move him from room to room. I run him while I am out and he does the downstairs while I sleep. LOVE THAT!

Pros:



1. Improved noise level (according to my friend who has an older model)

2. The "Super dirty" blue light is sensitive and works accurately. It does clean harder and longer in the area with more dust.

3. It's very convenient and easy to operate.

4. cleaning out the dirt is easy. Once I came to the realization that hair can and will absolutely get stuck in any kind of vacuuming device, I set my expectation at the ability to remove hair easily from the device, which can definitely be done with this unit. I consider cleaning dust and hair out of this unit relatively easy primarily because all the places that hair can get stuck into are pretty easily accessible and components can be easily removed and reattached.



Cons:



1. It will scratch your dark color furniture. I have dark colored furniture and this unit definitely scratches them when it goes around the legs of the furniture or move along the bottom edges. I ended up buying a lot of felt pads and stuck them to the front and sides of the unit (about 180 degrees of the front side), spaced out but fully covering all white plastic areas. I never worried about my furniture getting scratched up again.

2. The unit is virtually blind. It can ignore a big piece of paper on the floor if it's not in its calculated path. It seems silly at times. It's also funny but it doesn't know there is a piece of trash on its back and it can't clean it.

3. My unit seems to get obsessed with cleaning a certain area. For example, it will keep coming back to the kitchen 80% more than going to other areas. I had to physically move it and block the kitchen with the virtual wall.

4. If your place has a winding layout like mine, you can't just leave it on and forget about it. You will have to ask it to clean by section, which may mean that you will need more virtual walls. It will not find rooms/places too far away that are not "easily visible" from the home base.



In summary:



Even though I listed a of cons, I still consider this as a 4-star product. There is no perfect product. Judging by how well it performs its intended functions and how easy customer-specific issues can be resolved or worked around, I think this is a robust product that can benefit many buyers. I'm also looking forward to experimenting with the programming functions so it will do more things.

So far so good. Cleans our floors very well. The charge lasts for about what they publich (3 rooms). The product is a little noisy, not something you want on while eating a family dinner. The robot seems smart enough to clean an area and stay in that area until clean. There are some times when it does not hit a certain spot, but that is the exception. The bot did plow through a virtual wall once but I bet that was a user error and not the robot.

My boyfriend got me my Roomba 530 as a birthday gift. I just allowed it to run it's first cycle and I couldn't be happier. I have a one bedroom apartment and "Marvin" went through and cleaned the whole thing. It took about 1 1/2 hours start to finish.



Before I let him loose, I pre-cleaned by getting certain things off the floor. I can already tell that just by owning him, everything in my house will be cleaner since the floors have to stay clear and I don't like clutter on tables, counters, etc. When he began, he first cleaned the living room and zoomed around for the most part. Whenever he approached walls or furniture, he slowed down and never bumped into anything too hard. He transitioned seamlessly into my kitchen and laundry area which have linoleum floors and got all the crumbs up. Last, he headed for the bedroom and cleaned under the bed (yes!). It was definitely entertaining to watch him buzzing around.



Overall, he went over each area he cleaned 3-4 times and my carpet looks absolutely beautiful. He is much, much quieter than an upright vacuum and the beeping noises are very cute. However, I'd recommend running him during the day when you aren't looking for absolute silence--he might be too loud to deal with for some people if you are trying to sleep. I was impressed with the amount of dirt he picked up. Cleaning the filter and dust bin out only took about 2 minutes and it was easy to do. It's far less effort than dragging out my regular vacuum, plugging it in, keeping the cord from tangling or getting unplugged, etc. I will probably only bring out my Hoover once a month from now on, for deep cleaning purposes and to do my furniture with the attachments.



I haven't used the virtual walls yet, but I'm sure they will come in handy when I want him to concentrate on specific areas. I parked his home base in an out-of-the-way corner. I don't feel like I will need a timer or anything because I plan on just hitting Clean before I leave for work each day. Then when I get home, I'll have sparkling floors. Right now I'm the only one living here, until my boyfriend comes back from overseas, but even then I'm sure Marvin will still do a great job.



I definitely am giving this product two thumbs up. I'm already attached to my new robotic friend.

Used it in all the rooms of our three bedroom, two bathroom house during the first two days after receiving it, and it collected dirt and other trash that has accumulated since we remodeled our home last year, and we have a housekeeper that comes every two weeks.



The amount of dust/dirt collected by the iRobot 530 impressed both my wife and I, and will use it every week from now on.

 "Great idea but poor execution - not worth the money!" 2009-12-28

It is an idea that could revolutionize cleaning yet iRobot 560 isn't nearly as smart, foolproof or easy to use as advertised. It gets caught on rugs with pads under them, bumps into furniture quite hard, manages to tangle itself in an errant power or phone cord and most frustratingly, requires cleaning after every use - something no other vacuum requires. I am greatly disappointed and would like to return it!

We actually bought the 562 pet series from Hammacher because it had an extra second larger size bin and Hammacher gives a lifetime warranty on it, but this model is otherwise very similar to the one we bought. Ours has been in the house about two weeks now and our four little hair shedding machines are wondering what happened to all their hard work furring up the house.



We used to vacume with our upright, empty the dust chamber, (messy job!) vacume again, and still have a full dust receptacle again 5 minutes later. It wasn't a job we were very enthusiastic about at all. Now that we have Holly (yeah, we named ours too!) roaming the house, the floors are just spotless! It took most of the first week for the build-up of hair to get picked up enough so that we didn't have to clean the brushes several times in a session, but now that the worst of it is taken care of, we may not have to clean the brushes at all during a single session. In spite of how clean the floors LOOK to the naked eye now, it's still finding plenty of dirt and hair each day to clean.



It hasn't done too badly with being caught in things. Unlike others, we haven't really had problems with ours and cords. The only thing it's been caught up on so far was the end of the curtains, and a sheet that was hanging off the bed. It's put one wheel off the edge of the stairs a couple times too, and has complained it needed to be moved away from the edge. Once it got caught on the edge of the rug that folded up in front of it, but otherwise it seems able to get around on it's own pretty good. Also, it's darn cute scooting about doing it's thing!



The brushes haven't really struck us as too hard to clean either now that the hair load is more manageable in the house. We find mostly, it needs the hair pulled off the end pieces and bushings.



The battery recharges fairly quickly, and we've run it downstairs in the morning, charged it, and run it upstairs in the afternoon frequently. Our house will never have dirty floors again! Love it!

i have had this model for about 9 months now (i also have the 530 model) and i've not had any problems with it. believe it or not, i got mine from big lots for $150.00!! so shop around, folks!!



ok, for starters, i have 2 indoor cats and anyone with pets knows the ridiculous amount of fur that can and does accumulate throughout your home if you're not careful! well, this has been an absolute lifesaver for me. i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the fact that it can easily maneuver underneath my bed where my cats like to hang out sometimes.



i have not had any docking problems like those seen by another reviewer. when my roomba is finished, it returns to the docking station to charge and is ready to go again in a few hours.



note: you will need to clean roomba after almost every use if you have indoor pets that shed a lot like i do. not a problem, cleaning is easy and quick. empty the bin, empty the tray where the filter is and clean the brushes! voila, done!



my advice would be to purchase additional filters and brushes when they are on sale if you can find them. you will need them eventually.



the only reason i don't give this a 5 star review is that roomba has a tendency to not get into corners really well and it also pushes dirt around on hard floors instead of picking it up sometimes. besides that, it works like a charm, docks when done, and rarely gets "grounded" on something that it cant get over or around. the battery life isn't wonderful, but it cleans (with the exception of corners) pretty well and i run both about 3-4 times a week sometimes more to keep the kid's fur to a minimum.

I have had a Roomba for about 4 years now and would I purchase another one? No. It does a fairly good job of cleaning surface dirt. But there are 2 problems with it. It gets hung up on chair legs (the type that forms a "U" going from leg to leg) I had to put some pipe insulation on the legs to raise the chair up so the vacuum would bounce off it as apposed to riding over it. Not really a big deal in the long run. But the BIG problem is battery life. As with so many items that I purchase, I have to ask myself; what will it cost to feed this item? The problem in this area of course is that we usually don't know when it come to battery life. This pisses me off to the n'th degree. I'm in the home improvement business, and so many of my tools are battery powered. Have you seen the price of NiCads or Lithiums? You might just as well buy a new tool as apposed to replacing the battery. The worst in that regard is Skill - the batteries last just 6 months. In the case of the roomba - 1 year. So here's the deal; Are you willing to spend $69.00 every year? I did it twice. The first year I had roomba run every day. The second year I had it run twice a week. No difference, it still lasted only a year. Do they have the technology to make the batteries last longer? You bet they do! When was the last time you had to replace your rechargeable electric toothbrush? I have had 1 of mine for 11 years and another for 16.

Suggestion? Buy a Dyson and plug it in the wall. What a great vacuum!
