"Bad design, won't pick up much" 2010-02-06
By SLA (Boston, MA)
If it was physically possible to remove the old battery from my 8-year old Dustbuster 14.4V I wouldn't be looking for a new one. I bought this last week and will return it. The problem with the design on ALL these new B&D models is that accessory crevice extension is now built into the vacuum, reducing the opening of the device for debris pickup. If you take off the plastic cover and look inside at how the debris is supposed to collect, it has to make a 90 degree turn through a very small opening in order to collect inside. I have a rabbit and used my current Dustbuster to clean his cage and surrounding area, including discarded pieces of hay. Granted, I use a lot of filters, but at least it worked and managed to pick up items big and small. This model jammed in less than one minute. I actually had to use a small screwdriver, pencil, and my fingers to remove all the stuff that got stuck in the little chamber. There is no way to remove this extension since they built it into the design. If you have debris larger than dust to pick up with this, look elsewhere. Also, I would have given this to my 80-year old mother, but she had trouble turning it on/off, the button was so hard to push.

"Loses charge if you leave it on the charger" 2009-12-19
By Michael G. Jennings (San Jose, CA United States)
Why does NiCd still exist? It's been supplanted by NiMH and Lithium ion for about a decade. And if it can't go away, can't someone figure out how to make a charger that doesn't destroy the battery? It's been 30 years now...

This was a promising device and worked well at the start, but like all things equipped with NiCd battery packs it simply stops holding a charge after a distressingly short time. This is a 2008 model and it's now 2009 and the battery is good for about two minute, a minute and a half of which it at a speed too low to be particularly effective.

I've heard you can preserve the battery by running it all the way down every six months or by not leaving it on the charger. But honestly, I'd pay twice as much for a unit that I can count on for years without having to babysit it.

I cracked it open. It's *possible* to service the battery but only the more intrepid handymen would want to do it. I didn't even bother trying to hunt down a replacement pack. I think the next one I buy will get hot-rodded with a connector that works with the "intelligent" charger from my remote control boat.

"I think this is a great vacuum" 2009-12-06
By Jack (State College, PA)
We've had two of these - one for each end of the house - for about four months. They both worked great right out of the box, and have continued to work perfectly. Sure, the batteries run out of juice after 20 minutes of continued use. They are hand-vacuums after all! Don't use them continuously for 20 minutes. They're not designed to replace your stand-up, expensive vacuum cleaner.

I figure they save us about $140 a year, actually. That's because we used to have a cleaning person come every three weeks at $33 a clip, and because of the two dust-busters we have been able to cut our cleaning interval down to ever 4 weeks. Of course, we've saved a lot more because we now do the cleaning ourselves, but that was because of the economy, not just the Dust Busters. But we have a fun saying in the house now - until it's time for us to do the big cleaning job, the place is "Dust Buster clean" - and that's good enough for us for four weeks.

The built-in front-end extension for close cleaning is terrific, and the connections for the extensiion work very well in hard-to-get-to places. It's also very easy to empty and the simple hands-off mechanism for cleaning the filter is a great improvement over the old models. I also love that the plastic around the filter is transparent, so you can see when the unit needs to be emptied. B&D put a lot of thought into this little unit, and it shows.

We bought it for $39 at Lowes, and they take returns forever if you need. For some reason they have it in the hardware section instead of the household appliances section, so ask. But I find Amazon hard to beat for lots and lots of things, so you can't go wrong either place.
