So it seemed so promising at the beginning. Definitely removed more from the carpet than the Hoover that we tried for about a year. But it makes me feel like I own some high priced sportscar that is always in the shop. And this little piece of work is always in the shop.
Now mind you, we are clean people, so it is used several times a week, when it is here. But we don't have pets in doors, we don't wear shoes in our house, and several of the rooms are just area rugs, so we're not over working it. (Purchased initially for work around the office, but not dependable enough...) Nonetheless, we are now in for at least 12 belts and three brush rollers later, since there seems to be an internal tension problem that keeps wearing things out, and despite my repeated requests to Dyson that they replace this little lemon, they keep just telling me to check the belt again and then schedule more warrantee work at the Dyson repair place -
Did I mention this repair place is two hours away? Yup - the handy nearby repair places will not work on these vaccums. That should tell you something. So we have to keep that not-so-good-but-at-least-steady Hoover around for the times when Mr. Dyson is having R&R at the repair shop. And we have to keep the Hoover around because our housekeeper will not use the Dyson - no matter what.
Then there is the lovely clean the canister part of this ownership. The Hoover just pops open and drops the debris. Not the Dyson - some of it always sticks to the little holes along the central portion. This owner gets to remove this mass of dirt and skins cells and dust manually, until I bought a handy brush to do that job. By the time that's done, I have to reclean the area around the that! Disgusting.
So we are in search a refurbished Eurika Excaliber - the vaccuum that I had (problem free) for twelve years, and that's after a relative had it for 4 years. Why don't they make things like they used to - we wouldn't have to worry about recycling all this stuff if corporations would make them to last in the first place.....
There is no way we would purchase another Dyson.

got my dyson refurbished from ABC vacuum in Austin, TX. So far the vacuum is working pretty well. It is all mainly plastic and doesnt look as sturdy as the picture shows but it suctions well. Its really smooth to use as well. My wife that just had a C section tried it out and said it was really smooth to use. She vacuumed one room 6 days after surgery and said she loved it.
ABC vacuum included a few other tools and cleaning solutions which is a plus. Never thought i would spend that much money on a vacuum but its working out ok so far.

After years of searching for the perfect vac....I have found the gold!!! Well worth every penny! I have 2 dogs (a collie mix & a lab) both shed A LOT!!! This vac not only gets every single bit of dog hair, it also leaves my carpet looking brand new. My friend has a son with terrible dog allergies, and couldn't bring him to my home prior to buying this vac. Now he can come and play with no allergy issues what-so-ever. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!!! Thank you Dyson for making it a pleasure to vaccuum.

I have had the Dyson dc17 animal for a week or so now. It does appear to have strong suction. Does it really suck up more than other vacuums? Who knows. I do like the way it handles. It's easy to push around (I tried the Sears Performance rated highly by Consumer Reports but it was very heavy and difficult to maneuver), and to empty the canister is a simple push of the button. There is a lack of instructions. Basic instructions come with the vacuum, but I am technically inept so need detailed, easy to follow instuctions. There is a picture for the various attachments but nothing to say what each is for. I have bare floors with area rugs, and as far as I can tell, when you go to the bare floor mode, the vacuum doesn't pick up anything-whether it's on bare floor or carpet. My other vacuum didn't either. Is a Dyson of any kind worth the extra money? I researched vacuums for days, and while I can't say it's worth two to three times what you would pay for another brand, I am not sorry I spent the extra money. I have 5 dogs and had to clean or change the filters all the time on my old vacuum. Since the Dyson's are filterless, that alone was worth the extra money to me.

I bought a Eureka vacuum a few months ago, at first it did a great job cleaning up but that didn't last long. It was extremely loud and obnoxious, but it did work...for about a month. After spending about $150 on it and having it die on me, I decided to look at the more expensive vacuums hoping to find a better quality product. I shelled out almost $500 for the Dyson DC17 and I could not be happier! I loooove my dyson, I will never own another vacuum from another company again. It takes some time to get used to the hose, it can be a bit stiff, and some of the attachments are hard to maneuver, but all in all it is a wonderful product. You do have to be careful not to get the hose near any part of your body because it will suck your bones out with the powerful suction! We have 3 dogs and a cat, so keeping up with pet hair is a chore, but the Dyson makes quick work of cleaning up. I have wood floors and some area rugs, and have not had an issue with going from one floor type to another. Most other vacuums spit the pet hair out the back of the vacuum, but the Dyson picks up every hair. I was also able to vacuum off the entire set of stairs without hauling the vacuum up each step while doing a balancing act that a circus performer would be jealous of. The Dyson is also much quieter than the other vacuums I have owned, I can actually hear when my kids interrupt me when I'm cleaning...I guess that could be listed as the one downside of the product.
