This is the worst dirt devil product I have owned. Their descriptions lead me to believe that it would work fantastic. It has little to no suction especially when the filter has the least amount of dirt. The brush does not work. This is the feature I was counting on to pick up cat fur. The power reach with the brush attachment is very awkward to use. The only redeeming feature is when the crevice tool is attached without the brush attachment. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

A vacuum cleaner needs two things .. suction and firm brushing. The suction isn't great but workable, however the brushing is horrible. The air driven brush hardly has enough power to spin itself, and when touched to anything at all, the brush stops. Can't believe Dirt Devil actually sells this product. I will never buy another one of their products again -- they make terrible decisions about what works and what does not. This does not.

I share the same frustrations as everyone else. For Christmas, I asked my dear MIL for "A Dirt Devil" thinking of the classic, plad-bagged, rip-the-skin-off-the-back-of-your-hand-if-you-got-it-in-there vacuum that my mom has. I have Berber carpeting on my split-entry home's steps and it was an awful choice to begin with for stairs that act as an "entry rug" for the home (even though there is one), but this vacuum's excuse for a "power" beater bar is terrible. It won't even vacuum the easiest stuff off the steps. It is certainly not helped by the tight-looped varied level carpeting - it can't get any good suction on it, or comb the fibers. If i wanted a junky dust-buster, I would have asked for one. This "vacuum" has tainted my opinion of the hand-held "dirt devil" vaccuums being the best as far as little vacuums go.

I've used several different brands and styles of canister vacuums, and this is one of the worst. The suction is fine, but it has a couple design problems that I find very annoying.



The first problem you notice right away is the two attachments sit in a holder on the nozzle, which fall off constantly as you vacuum, so you end up removing them and setting them aside which eventually will lead to them being misplaced and lost. Other canister vacuums usually have the attachments inside the canister unit somewhere, or hidden out of the way.



The second problem is the unit has two power switches, one for the canister and one for the power head, which turn on separately. In every other canister vacuum I've used, one switch on the handle turns on both. So you end up turning on and off two switches on different parts of the vacuum, really inconvenient.



The third problem is there is no easy way to vacuum carpeted stairs. The power head doesn't fit on stairs, same as every other canister unit, but there is no attachment that works well. In the manual they recommend using the upholstery tool and the crevice tool, but the upholstery tool works horribly on carpeted stairs.



I have no experience with other types of vacuums, but it seems to me the best would be an upright bagless vacuum with a removable hose for stairs, drapes, and upholstery. Canister vacuums are bulky, hard to store, and most importantly hard to move around as you vacuum. If you're set on getting a canister vacuum anyway, I would buy one that doesn't have the problems I listed above.

I was looking for a powerful canister vac with a powered floor brush so I could clean under the bed and the sofa. It had to have a disposable bag, because I was tired of the mess made when I emptied the bagless upright I bought last year. Hoover is now part of Maytag, and both makers have excellent reputations. This Hoover S3590 is just what I wanted, and it is very satisfactory. It also has an automatic cord rewinder, and the cord is long enough. It would be hard to find anything to complain about with this vacuum.

I bought this vacuum for my daughter to use in her apartment of the college. When I opened the factory original packing, I realized that the power nozzle was not there, I complaint to Amazon, but they told us it past the return date. When we went online, we saw there were a few bloggers complaint about the same thing. Of course I went to Hoover website to buy the part, it costs us over $60 + shipping. If this had happened before or happen again, the factory and amazon should acknowledge that, someone is not honest during the packing. There are so many websites selling just the nozzle, they can make a few bucks. As for the machine itself, it is very good. It is perfect even for my own 4-bedroom house. Those tools are very helpful. I vacuum the lint from my suits and coat, window sills, dressing table ... instead of using the duster (the degree of suction is adjustable, it is almost comparable to another Miele Vacuum cleaner that we also have, but the Hoover Duros is 5 times less expensive) - I will recommend this little monkey to others, but just check count the tools, the main power head and check the packing, as soon as you receive the shipment.

We bought this vacuum as a supplement to a larger, more cumbersome upright so we wouldn't have to schlep the upright up the stairs. We keep the Duros on the 2nd floor and use it there exclusively. We've been using it for around 8-10 months. Overall, you pretty much get what you pay for. A so-so vacuum that's serviceable, cleans ok, but has some serious design flaws.



The good:

1. Good suction

2. The power nozzle that cleans bare floors as well as carpets works pretty well. Better than expected on bare floors.

3. Very maneuverable. Much better than the upright. The power nozzle has a very well-designed "knuckle" that twists and bends well. Gets under and around obstacles.

4. Has bagged, not bagless, collection. Bagless doesn't contain the dirt when you empty it.

5. Retractable cord works well.



The no-so-good and poor

1. Poor: very short cord. Another 10 feet would not have broken the bank. We have to unplug it and replug it in to get the entire area we cover (and it's not that big). On the plus side, the cord is rubber (or a very flexible vinyl), much better than other Hoovers with stiff vinyl cords.

2. Poor: Balance. Overall, this is a very clumsy unit to carry and the power nozzle does not stand on its own. You have to lean it against something or it will fall over. The canister itself is very heavy, rolls well, but when you attach the power nozzle and wand assembly, it's totally ungainly. Very clumsy and unbalanced to carry.

3. Poor Accessories: brush, crevice tool, etc. are really cheap junk.

4. So-so: Power switch is on the canister itself and you either have to bend over and push it or step on with your foot; either way, it's clumsy. They should have put the power switch in the handle. (The power nozzle on/off switch is in the handle; why not just add a 2nd one there?).



Overall, a serviceable machine and decent value for the $.

Do yourself a favor and pick out another vacuum to buy. This thing may be the worst home purchase i have made to date. Why would a vaccum have an adujustable power knob? Isn't the purpose to pick up as much crap off the floor as possible? Even at full power, the suction on this thing is a joke, any attachment falls to the floor & i feel like breaking the machine into 100 pieces everytime i am forced to use it.
