In the past, I've wasted my money by buying vacuum bag sealing kits and can never get them to seal as tightly or as well as the Ziploc bags. The sealing pump from Ziploc is easy to use and easy to clean. I've even put the parts of the sealer unit in the dishwasher (top shelf) although that's not really necessary - a little soap and hot water are adequate to clean the sealer.



I bought these refill bags from Amazon.com because they stopped carrying the gallon size bags at my local grocery store. I can still buy the quart size bags at the store, but there are times I just need to seal something a little larger.



The main trick is the make sure the zipper on the bag is completely sealed before putting the pump on the valve. Then it is easy to hand pump the excess air out to make a airtight seal. This is great for extending the life of foods that you store.



Another neat thing about Ziploc's unit is that it doesn't require batteries and is quiet. There's another zipper close brand of bags that works almost as good, but uses a battery operated pump that is very noisy and needs new batteries every once in a while.

While I found these for much cheaper in my local supermarket I just wanted to post a review of them here. These are somewhat pricey, especially if you don't have the ability to reuse them but the vacuum holds very well both in the freezer or a hot car (keeping snacks from drying out). I also used these to cook up some steaks Sous-Vide style and they worked great. So far it only looks like you get their pump with the quart sized bags but since I'll probably be using them more often I should have more than a few on hand. If the price were similar to the regular bags it's probably all I would use.

Excellent product but hard to find at the stores in our area. I use it for blocks of cheese, cold cuts, anything that is put in the freezer. Keep things in the fridge so fresh and not freezer burned in the freezer. Probably not good for fresh veggies or anything that you don'y want squished though. Reynolds used to make a similar product but they stopped making it.

 "Replacement for Reynolds vacuum bags" 2010-01-30

Apparently Reynolds no longer makes quart sized vacuum bags. These are great replacements for the Reynolds bags and they work just as well with the battery powered pump which comes from Reynolds. The bags are probably more expensive than the bags you would buy for a counter-top vacuum sealing system but there are numerous advantages for me which make these worth the price.



1. I need a small footprint. The pumps (from Reynolds or Zip Lock) are small, inexpensive and easy to store.



2. I need to run a vacuum bag system in my office and at home. This is a perfect solution if on has to vacuum bag food at multiple locations. I could easily have carried a pump back and forth to work but they are so inexpensive I simply purchased a second one.



The Zip Lock bags are reusable. They do an excellent job of preventing freezer burn and reducing food waste. They are best used for foods you know will be in the freezer for two weeks or more. Also, we had a problem in the past with fish smelling up our freezer when stored for a long time. The fish would be wrapped in butcher's freezer paper and put in a regular Zip Lock Freezer bag. The smell still permeated our freezer and refridgerator. The vacuum bags solved this problem. This product is an outstanding spin off of the counter top vacuum sealer systems and well worth the extra cost of the bags.

We loved the Reynolds Vacuum bags and pump for storing small food items, however we couldn't find the replacement bags. I finally found some on line and they wanted $59.00 for twelve bags.......... we only paid $7.99 for the pump and about a dozen bags to begin with....... then I stumbled on the Ziploc vacuum bags and tried them and they work fine........ and the cost is reasonable.. plus the Reynolds pump works with them........

The concept of the vacuum bag is great, even though this product is no longer available, I really like using them for freezing meats. This product is hard to use, and the failure rate is high on hte bags sealing. Ziplock's decision to pull it was probably a good one. So, I guess I will have to invest in the vacuum sealer machine to continue the process...as soon as I runout of bags!

I have both Reynold's HandiVac and Ziploc's pumps and have used both Reynold's and Ziploc bags with each pump. Both brand of bags work equally well with either pump.



Reynold's HandVac pump is much easier to use since it is battery operated but I've heard that they are discontinuing it.



Now FoodSaver has started making their own handheld pump and bags. It cost 4 times as much as the Reynold's did, but it is rechargeable.
