This Hand Vac has very little extra sucking power compared to an old 15.6 V, cheap competitor's version that I still have that cost half as much. I thought it would have much more power since it higher voltage. It is also bulkier than my old one so harder to use for a car interior or tight spaces. It lacks a "battery charged" indicator, and has no wall mount, so I have to take out the battery to charge the vac and reconnect it again when it is charged. This is inconvenient. Other models allow you to just leave the vac plugged in which I prefer and have a "charge complete" colored light indicator. Time will tell if this model will keep a charge if the battery is not used for couple of weeks without recharging. It alsocame with no attachments. They need to be purchased separately.



Also, no information came with the vac nor can I find any on the Black and Decker website, as to what tools also take this 18 Volt battery. It's great that it is interchangeable, but not great that you can't easily find out where else it works.

I was looking for a powerful dustbuster and this vac filled my needs when I got it. The problem is the battery eventually will not hold a charge and it seems that every-time I go and get it to clean a small spill, the battery is almost dead and the power is dismal. Too expensive for what you get and should have been a lithium ion, not ni-cad. Really not a recommended buy.

I bought this at the store today and used one of my fully charged 18 Volt Black and Decker batteries I already had. The only reason I didn't give it 1 star is because the battery is swappable with my other 18 Volt Black and Decker units. Unlike the weed-eater and other things, however, this lacks the power you would expect from an 18 volt power supply! I've had cheap crappy uprights with less power that actually had more suction. This manages to get a couple pieces of fluff, and some stray kitty litter, but only after several passes or creating a seal with the floor directly over the particles to be picked up. It'd be about as easy to just bend down and pick the offending particle up. This will be going back at the next opportunity. I expect a heck of a lot more power from a heavy hand-held that costs sixty bucks!

I waited a good long time before I reviewed this product. I wanted to make absolutely sure that I knew everything about it before I sang its praises to other possible customers. I must say that I am impressed. First with the suction power. For a handheld vac, it doesn't leave much behind (within reason.) One must consider, of course, that it is not meant to pick up bowling balls or objects too big to comfortably fit into the opening. It is great for dirt, grit, animal hair, rabbit poops, moths, and even spiders, though I would recommend emptying the easily removed bag and filter inside lest the spiders and moths work together to escape and go up your nose while you are sleeping. The charger can be wall mounted, which is nice, though I did not use this feature. It is easy to clean, but the precision suction funnel tube thing did not really come in handy because I had trouble keeping it locked in place. It works perfectly fine without out. Believe me, I did a lot of research reading customer reviews before I decided to try this brand and model out. I was not disappointed. Lastly, the battery in the appliance holds a charge for quite awhile when not in use, and I have left it unplugged for as much as a week between uses and it still did the job. Not so great for use with extremely fine dust particles as the filter is not precise enough. Also I would not recommend using it for wet things. All in all, GREAT JOB!

We have hardwoods and a big dog that molts twice a year (blows her coat) so this was purchased just to pick up the seasonal Fur Babies that congregate within hours of vacuuming. The battery has a very short life but I can hit all of the corners before it is finished. Does not pick up cat litter well at all. Fur fills the small cup quickly. The cup is easy to clean, but you do have to touch fuzzy contents. The toggle type power switch is distant, awkward and snaps into the "On" and "Off" position -- if you have small hands it may take both of them just to turn it on and/or off. The attached crevice tool is a nice feature. We have had several Handheld Vacs and know their many limitations, this one does do the job i purchased it for. I gave it 2 stars because of it's very light duty, weak suction, short battery life, and awkward design.

Really researched this purchase. So many hand vacs are now too heavy. I only use mine for small tasks, crumbs, ashes, dog hair and such---for quick clean up. Very good suction and stays charged for a long time. Others are probably very good with brushes and all, for a more thorough cleaning. I wanted small and light weight, this fits the bill.

This is a nice vacuum, has really good power and an attachment for small spaces. The attachment has a point to it which helps clean the nooks and crannies of my car (but not 100%). I use this in the house nearly everyday to clean up from the cat. The downsides are that you have to hold down the "on" button as you use it and if you are not using the attachment piece, there is no where to attach it to the vacuum. Otherwise it's a good vacuum, and a good price. Holds onto its power longer than the previous one I had.



Updated 1/12/10 - I have to say in the beginning, this had lots of power. Now, in the first minute or two of vacuuming out my car that isn't even that dirty, I can hear the "whirring" sound start to die down...not sure why since it's on the charger 24 hours/day and the inside is cleaned out regularly. I can usually get through vacuuming up a small amount of light dirt in the front seat. My suggestion is to take the car mats out and shake the dirt off - save the vacuum power for the little spaces!

In the relatively short time I have had this item it has served me very well. The pointed suction end is what I was seeking to help cleaning out my Roomba robot vacuum after use. Seriously. I realize the title seems absurd and is bordering on creepy, but it's true. I have two male guinea pigs that live in a 14 sq foot C&C cage with fleece bedding...I needed something that would quickly clean up their droppings without clogging like my other two hand vacuums do (I bought two others for this purpose and even picking up individual droppings caused them to clog...so annoying!). I saw a demo video for the Kone online and noticed that it picked up popcorn so I thought it would be perfect for this and it is!



Not only can I have it on display next to their cage, but I don't have to mess with unlocking it from the charging base or any other ridiculous thing. I will say, however, that this baby is LOUD. I try not to use it while they're in the cage because it scares the crap out of them (not literally, but if it did, the Kone would take care of that) and instead wait until they're having play time. Even then it startles them, but they're guinea pigs, so everything startles them.



The color is fantastic and the base is wonderful...no cords showing and I don't have to wrestle with it like my other two hand vacs. I love the design...for me, it's very comfortable to hold and I have no issues with it slipping out of my hand. I suppose if I were using it for an extended period of time, the weight might eventually be a bother, but for quick <10min cleanups, it's great.



Bottom line: The Dirt Devil Kone is the Harley of hand vacuums. It's attractive, well made, loud and scares small animals. Perfect!
