 "Not Impressed" 2010-06-14

I just bought this vacuum from Amazon. Upon receiving it I opened it and vacuumed one of the rooms in my house and found that it snagged my carpet in two seperate places!! I was very upset with the vacuum and I hope amazon will refund me the money for this poor product.

To those considering this vacuum keep in mind that it will snag your carpet and this will eventually cost more as you replace your carpet and vacuum.

"Not too good for tall people!" 2010-05-18
By R. Hoban (Raleigh, NC)
This vacuum sucks great! It has a tendency to bump into things behind me as I drag it around. The carpet attachment works well. But, my only complaint is the fact that a person that is taller (I'm 5'9") will find this uncomfortable to bend over in the awkward position while using the vacuum. But, it sucks well!

I bought this model vacuum about a year ago. At first I liked it as it was easy to handle and the attachments were easy to change out, but it doesn't have much suction. After 1 year, some of the attachments no longer work, so I would not recommend this purchase. I have had my old electrolux fixed, and even at 15 years old, it is a better vacuum.

"if you're used to an upright, don't buy a canister!" 2010-03-19
By codyaya (USA)
I've only ever used upright vacuums so I'm not sure if I can really be fair about this particular vacuum cleaner.

The reasons I purchased this vacuum, over another upright vacuum, are:

1. I was looking for a hepa filtration system that wouldn't cost $800.

2. My old upright vacuum nearly broke my back when I tried pushing it over carpet. I thought using this vacuum would be lighter and easier to manouver.

3. I needed a vacuum that I could switch the brush roller on and off.

PROS:

on/off, carpet/bare floor (brush roller) controls are easily accessed because the switch is next to the handle

suction is better than my old vacuum, so much so that it will eat curtains, carpet fringe or anything else that's not nailed down

hepa filtration is great (after never having it in a house full of pets)

the head reaches all the way under furniture and beds without having to move them

the bag is super easy to replace

the power cords is automatically retracted with the push of a button

CONS:

This vacuum cleaner is EXTREMELY difficult to control! I feel like I'm in an episode of 'I Love Lucy' when I'm trying to vacuum. The head swivels around wildly, while the hose gets tangled up around my knees along with the power cord. I needed something that would be easy on my back, but this thing has to be carried while I'm using it, so it's much harder on my back than my old upright. I feel like I need at least 2 extra arms to manage this vacuum cleaner. I really regret buying it.

 "Piece of junk!" 2010-04-21
By Aotearoa (New York)
you get what you pay for. Almost every part of this poorly designed vac cleaner has a fault. so let's start:

1) carpet/ floor nozzle doesn't stay in "brush setting" for hardwood floor

2) nozzle falls off

3) Connecting hose falls off the metal wand all the time and hits your toes/foot - ouch!!

4) cheap plastic hose twists and kinks off, resulting in loss of suction

5) the plastic body housing the vac mechanism constantly goes belly up everytime you manouvre it

6) cord got tangled inside housing after 8 months, I had to take the orange cover apart to fix it (harder than it sounds)

7) useless accessory brush - too small a footprint to do anything useful with it

8) poor suction even when it's turned up to MAX

9) holder for the wand broke off after 3 months, cheap plastic thing that's obviously not strong enough to withstand the torque of a long wand resting on it

10) So loud when it's going you better wear an earmuff if you don't want to go deaf prematurely

DO NOT waste your hard earned 60 bucks on this piece of crap!

"How to fix the vac!!" 2010-04-02
By D. McCulloch (Nashville, TN United States)
So I have this vac and while it worked OK for a short period of time, the cord recoil mechanism eventually got stuck or something, reneding the vac almost useless. Since I have a yard sale coming up, I figured I'd spend 30 minutes trying to figure out how to repair the unit. Opening the vac is a big pain, but I've put the steps below:

1. If you open the section that holds the bag, you'll notice there are 4 screws (phillips head). You need to remove these 4 screws using a long handle screw driver, magnetic tipped would be nice.

2. There is 1 more screw holding the orange part onto the gray part. To get to this screw, you need to pull out the cord retract button (located on top of the unit). Be careful not to break this piece, you'll need it later. There is a big spring under the button, keep tabs on that as well. Now, there is a screw in one of the holes under this button. Use your phillips head screwdriver to remove this screw (again, magnetic tip would be nice).

3. Carefully remove the orange top, but be aware if will still be connected to the motor . Now, you can unravel the coil mechanism. There are two white wires that connect to the cord mechanism. If they are not reconnected, the unit will not start. Make sure these are connected, be careful because they don't have a lot of slack.

4. Replace orange cover, replace your coil rewind button / spring and put 4 screws in the collection area and start suckin'.

Hope this helps someone, I know it took me a while and a lot of searching to find an answer.

 "Good little vacuum" 2010-03-22
By LF (NE USA)
This is a good little vacuum and I can't complain about the price. It's light but powerful. One problem...the metal wand constantly detaches from the plastic wand it attaches to. It's dropped on my foot a couple of times which really HURTS. No matter how tight I insert it, it eventually detaches. I hope someone from Hoover reads this and that they do something about it.

"Worst vacuum on the market!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY" 2010-03-13
By Heidi E. Keene (summerland key, fl United States)
I bought this cute little vacuum, and after absolutely hating it for nearly one year, I have junked it. First of all, it is very loud. Second, wildly flimsy. Beyond that all the tools fall off while you use it! Even the main floor attachment. To make this more aggravating, the actual hoses (the metal ones) fall off each other! It also has a flip brush option for carpet/hardwood. When you flip it into position, it just flips right back when you begin your task!

If I hadn't immediately thrown away all the packaging, I would have returned it.

Please dont waste your money on this piece of crap. I am sooooo surprised that hoover actually has not pulled it! I would never buy any hoover again.

"Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Bagged Upright Nice Vacuum!" 2010-02-08
By Kathy S. Thomas (Gastonia, NC USA)
This vacuum cleaner is better than any Hoover product I have ever owned. It was super simple to assemble. The only problem I had with it: the belt broke within five minutes of first use. Figuring this was just a matter of a defective belt, I just went out and bought replacements. I didn't contact the company for a new one, which I am sure I would have gotten one if I had. I didn't want to wait; and they are not expensive at all, so I just bought a 2 pack of belts at my local Wal-Mart.

Replacing the belt was easy. Just remove four screws, take off the bottom plate, lift out the roller, and slip the new belt on. It does take a little strength to stretch the belt into place; but it is not extrememly hard. The vacuum has been working flawlessly since I put the belt on.

I like the dirt sensor on this model. Before, I had no idea if my carpet still had dirt in it after I vacuumed. With the dirt sensor, all I need to do is watch the green and red lights. When the green light stays on, the carpet is free of loose dirt particles.

I'm not sure I like the HEPA filters yet. I have never had to deal witht these before. I did tend to forget to clean the bottom filter in my old vacuum, which probably caused it to lose suction over the years. Since I need to wash the HEPA filter every time I change the bag, I will probably wash the bottom filter, also. Perhaps this will prolong the life of the vacuum.

I really like the full bag indicator on the vacuum. I have only used the vacuum four or five times since I got it. The bag is already showing full. I would have had no idea the bag could have filled up that fast without the indicator. Of course, with the HEPA bags, there is a tendancy for the pores in the bag to get clogged, so, although it does not feel full when it is checked, it still needs changing to prevent rupture of the bag.

This model has soft rubber wheels to prevent tire marks on your carpet. Almost leaves your carpet looking as if you never vacuum! :)

The push in, pull out hose is much easier to use than the one on my old model. On my old model, the hose had almost no suction until you bent over and slid the carpet height adjustment all the way to the right. Then the suction changed from floor to hose. With the WindTunnel, all you do is take the hose out and put the tools on you want to use. When you finish, just take the tools off, and put the hose back in. No bending necessary!

All the tools store on the vacuum cleaner either in the small tool compartment on top of the bag compartment, or on the back of the vacuum where you

i never write reviews but had to comment on this hoover. for the money it is an absoutely amazing machine. the suction is incredible and it pulls itself along almost if it were a self-propeled machine, which it isnt. the air smells clean as and after you vaccum meaning no dust is coming out of it unlike other machine. i read reviews that were critical of this machine because it wasnt good on bare floors - well duh - it isnt designed for bare floor cleaning! its meant for carpet and it does a phenomenal job! would highly recommend it if you are only cleaning carpet.

 "Flimsy hunk of junk" 2010-01-09
By woodwacker (Hunt Valley, MD)
The Hoover Anniversary Bagged Vacuum is a flimsy piece of junk. It is made of 85% plastic and all parts are as delicate as it is possible to make them. The moral of this story is if you buy cheap (Chinese) junk, you got cheap junk. After about ten uses in a small floor area, the left wheel broke completely off. This after the tool holders failed, the hose holder going into the intake broke, and the the handle release stopped working because it also broke. I suspect the Hoover waranty does not cover any of this. If they actually fix this breakage I will change this review.

For comparison purposes, we have two of the old Hoover Concept One vacuums made in the USA. These are built like a tank and are still running.

The only good thing about the newer vacuums is the air powered brush. Great for cat hair on upholstry.

 "Do Not Buy" 2010-01-09
By J. Storey
I received this for Christmas (I picked it out) and I'm very disappointed. The vacuum is so loud my ears ring after using it to vacuum my house. The suction on the hose is so strong it practically renders the hose unusable for reaching higher than your waist. I even bought the extended hose, same problem. I am so surprised by this as I had a Hoover many years ago and really loved it.

Also, the self-propelled mechanism is jerky. The only good thing I can say is the suction is very strong. Now if they could work on the other problems they might have a vacuum worth buying.

I suggest if you buy this vacuum, invest in a good pair of earplugs!

 "Wanted to like it..." 2009-12-18
By Russ (NJ USA)
Picked out this model after seeing a favorable Consumer Reports review, and the price was attractive compared to other options. However it was dead-on-arrival...it simply did not operate when the power switch was turned on. The power switch is a very flimsy plastic slider with some plastic linkage to the actual electrical switch, however this is all hidden within the chassis of the unit and not something you can fix without a lot of work. So I'll be returning this unit. It's just as well... I would not predict a long life for that switch even if it was working.

So I can't comment on how well the thing vacuums...but I'm not inclined to try a replacement unit. The hatch for the attachments seems pretty flimsy and prone to opening when you don't want it to. The attachments themselves are absolutely the cheapest plastic things Hoover could get away with.

"Best Vacuum Cleaner I have owned" 2010-02-02
By GardenLili (SW Indiana)
In the past I have had Eureka and Dirt Devil mainly. I got this vacuum cleaner because I have a lot of laminate flooring and I wanted a small, lightweight canister. Puling around a big vacuum cleaner to do wand work is a pain. However, a great surprise was how well the upright did my floors. It auto adjusts from rug to floor. It cleans very well. The little canister is great for stairs, floors (under furniture) and walls and other hard to get places, and it is very light. I also like the idea of a bag in both units. I have never owned a bagless because I don't want to mess with the dirt -- transferring it to another container. In the 1950s my mother had a vacuum with a reuseable bag. It was awful to clean. This product was great idea, Hoover.

I have never written a review before but am so impressed with this vacuum that I wanted to review it. We live in a four story townhome (lots of carpeted stairs) and really needed something that is good on carpet, stairs and wood floors. This is the perfect vacuum! The fact that it is very light is great and makes it so easy to carry up and down the stairs...plus it works great on the stairs. The cannister is all we need for kitchen clean ups and vacuuming the furniture and fits easily in a small closet. All in all I am really pleased with this purchase and feel like I have finally (after buying several others) found the perfect vacuum for us.

 "Love this vacuum" 2010-02-02
By Adrienne Wynn (Palm Coast, FL)
I received this last week. It arrived a lot earlier than I was originally told which was music to my ears. After reading Consumer Reports and a lot of reviews, I opted for this. The Wind Tunnel was in the running but when I tried it out, it was just too heavy.

I really like vacuuming with this machine because it makes it so easy. My carpets never looked so good. The cannister is great for small areas and for woodwork. I have no problem with the strap and don't mind where the attachments go. You just need to get used to it.

The vacuum itself has a great suction. I use the lower settings for my heavier small rugs. True, you really can't use it on lightweight throw rugs but I'd rather have the good suction. Just take those smaller rugs and shake them outdoors like we did in the not-so-distant past. The vacuum works great on my dark tile floors too with the help of the LED light. Also an advantage is the illuminated In-Handle controls. The cord is a big plus since I can a few rooms with one outlet.

The price was right. My daughter-in-law has a Dyson and is now considering one of these.

"Light weight doesn't tell the full story" 2010-01-31
By edward caro (monterey park, ca, US)
My wife and I have been through many generations of vacuum cleaners through our 55 years of married life. Through the years, we have owned canisters, uprights, bagged and bagless, self-propelled and muscle powered types. We even fell for the Dyson hype about his design that "doesn't lose suction". He failed to mentioned that his 4-wheeled design was difficult to maneuver until he came out with his "super maneuverable ball-drive" design. Yes, we are senior citizens, so we are keenly aware of our diminished physical prowess. But that is just part of the problem. Until this year, we had a self-propelled, bagged, upright Hoover Wind Tunnel model which was quite heavy (to lift). The self-propelled feature was meant to make up for this extra heft. Unfortunately, it had several serious design flaws, the worst one of which was this: If you picked up the unit by the handle without first disengaging the drive system, the tension on the cable that linked the handle to the drive system would break a cheap plastic component which then rendered the drive system useless. After replacing the broken part a few times, we eventually learned not to pick the unit up by the handle. Another design flaw was the sloppy wheel to axle fit. It was so sloppy that the wheels tended to splay inward and rub against the chassis thus increasing the force it took to push the unit. We were thus predisposed to believe that weight was an important consideration for our next vacuum cleaner; the lighter, the better; or so we thought. So the next vacuum cleaner we brought home was a super light-weight Oreck. It was super light alright and very strong suction too. Much to our surprise (and disappointment) it took just as much effort to use as our old heavy Hoover. The problem with the Oreck lies with its tiny wheels. It rolls right along on hardwood floors, linoleum or carpets with really short naps but the dinky little wheels bog down on even the mildest plush carpet. The strong suction aggravates the situation when it sucks the carpet up against the vacuum's inlet which makes it harder to move back and forth. So back to the store it went. After reading a glowing report on the Hoover UH30010COM, we bought one.

The good:

1. It is very light which makes it easy to pick up.

2. Powerful suction

3. Wheels have lots of clearance so it doesn't rub against the chassis

4. 2-speed is a nice feature

5. Bag in front of the riser tube allows the handle to swing all the way down to the floor to get under most beds and furniture.

6. HEPA filter keeps dust ontained

7. Quieter, compared to previous models

8. Ample cord length with good cord storage scheme

9. Bright headlights

The not so good:

1. Can't vacuum throw rugs, sucks up anything that's not nailed down

2. Beater brush helps pull the unit forward but fights you when you pull it back

3. Wheels bog down in modest plush carpet and takes a lot of force to move

4. Can't use deodoriser because it clogs HEPA filter bag. Which means putting up with stinky discharge air or changing expensive HEPA filter bags often

Bottom line - It seems to me, rather than weight, a more appropriate criteria for selecting a vacuum cleaner is the amount of force it takes to move it over a carpeted floor. Weight alone doesn't tell the whole story. What really makes you tired is fighting drag (or friction).

A 5 pound vacuum cleaner with tiny wheels and lots of friction will make you work hardwer than a 20 pound unit with decent wheels, good bearings and properly set clerance so that the carpet doesn't get sucked up against the vacuum inlet port.

One caveat - In a world without friction, weight (actually mass) would be the determining factor for how much force it takes to move an object. The lighter the object, the less force it takes to move it. A vacuum cleaner is typically moved back and forth, which means that most of the energy is expended accelerating and deccelerating its mass over a certain interval of time. Friction aggravates the situation. Friction is what prevents you from being able to "lift" a fairly light nail out of a piece of wood with your fingers. In the real world of a carpteted home, friction more so than weight, becomes the dominant factor that determines how tired we get after vacuuming our carpets. My advice: The next time you go shopping for a vacuum cleaner, bring along a sample piece of carpeting material similar to what you have in you home and do an actual push/pull test. Weight doesn't tell the whole story.

"This vacuum is a gem!" 2010-01-31
By Toni Lee (Denver, CO)
This vacuum is everything it's promised to be. It is light- weight, and easy to use. It has so much suction it self-propels itself accross my carpet. It has a long cord and altho it doesn't rewind, you can't have everything & keep it lightweight. It's so much fun to vacuum with a machine that picks up everything off the carpet. The canister is better at picking up cat litter off the hardwood. The suction on that is great too. I bought this sight unseen after I heard about it on a TV program - not an info-mercial. They were discussing several products. They said the Hoover UH3001COM Platinum was better than competitors that sold for $2000. I found it on-line under the suggested retail price. What a bargain!

I needed an inexpensive vacuum with attachments and tried this. It is EXTREMELY loud, and does not do a good job picking up debris on my tile floors. i feel the "blowback" on my feet as I vacuum with any sand/dust etc just redistributed. I have to go over small items like pine needles or crumbs twice to get it to pick up. It does work much better on carpet, and has very good suction. The attachments work well with good pickup. I do not recommend this product, and will use it as my "upstairs machine" where I have all carpeting.

This is a good vaccum for commercial use/first time vaccum. Suction power is excellent. The tool caddy is a bit hard to put tools on, but i never use it so it doesn't matter. By Barry H. (Sacramento USA)
I live in an apartment and I bought a new carpet. If you've bought a carpet before you know how much they "shed" in the first few days. The hand sweeper didn't do the job, so I needed a vacuum. I calleed my daughter & she told me how much she loved her dirt devil. So I checked out the reviews & it had one of the best overall ratings so I bought one. Arrived in two days, took me ten minutes or so to read the instructions & to assemble the vac & away we went. It works great - powerful suctions & convenient to use. I like the light and the extra hook on the handle so you can loop your power cord there and avoid running over it allthetime. Only drawback is the noise. It is loud. So I put in earplugs when I vac. An easy 5 stars from this old batchelor. I'm happy! You will be too if you're looking for an inexpensive top quality vac.

This vacuum makes a bigger mess than you started with when you use it on wood/hard floors. I used it on our wood floors & it actually shot the dirt all over the place. It probably took me 5 times longer to vacuum than normal & it didn't even pick everything up. It did work great on our carpet. Over half of our house has wood floors so this isn't the vacuum for us.

Mostly use this to clean rugs that are constantly getting dirty thanks to my crawling infant. Great price, great product! Not bagless, but that doesnt bother me at all because I havent had to replace the bag yet even after owning for a couple of months, and even when I do its a small price to pay for such a great machine.

I got this vacuum after buying and returning a more expensive one. This vacuum is small and simple but it is mighty. We are so glad we got it and what a great price! We only have 3 small bedrooms to vacuum so it works fine for us. Not sure how it would hold up if we needed to use it more frequently and for a larger space. You have to assemble it yourself when it arrives, but I found that to be fairly easy. Lightweight and durable.

The belt broke on third usage, but hopefully will work better with replacement.
